i met the commander of PTF3 NASTY.........

today. and for all of us with a few miles on us, the names u.s.s. turner joy and u.s.s. maddox should ring a bell.


PTF3 NASTY was one of a couple other NASTYS(look it up their bad azz) that took part in the strafing of (2) north vietnamese islands way back when under the guidance of the CIA.


the following day the maddox and turner joy came under fire and the ticonderoga CAP(combat air patrol) decided it would be fun to waste a few PT boats owned by another country as well as the turner joy and maddox lobbing a slew of 5" rounds and a few "fish"(torpedos) at the north vietnamese and basically it was the ............




GULF OF TONKIN INCIDENT!

after speaking with the commander of PTF3 NASTY, he told us that only 5 years ago was all the info declassified. his boss WAS THE CIA!

CIA had enlisted a bunch of germans scalliwags(wharfrats) from some damn port in germany, to crew boats. that didnt work out. one kraut was an ex U-BOAT commander and spent 10 years after the war in the big house for crimes against humanity. yer true blonde haired blue eyed aryan nazi moron. the commander and him didnt see eye to eye it seems. they next hired a bunch or norwegians to crew the NASTYS. since they were orginally made in norway these guys knew their poo.


main goal was to blow up a bunch of russky built patrol boats in haiphong harbor with south vietnamese seals. this kinda of worked.


NASTYS needed 15 feet of draft under them,so they supported the SWIFT boats in riverine ops.


i read a bunch of info on them and it was wayyyyy over the top reading. lets just say they got very little support from uniformed u.s. forces and their butts were kinda of hanging out in space a few times.

he said they had a few of the NASTYS do 48knots with their mahogney hulls clean. 80 footers doing 48 knots! wow count me in!


funnier than hell guy. was complaining how dr. nelson ford screwed up his colt .45 sights and the round was going around corners! the dr. drifted his rear sight after seeing a draft of where round was hitting and drifted dovetail sight to point of aim(POI). and we laughed and joked. i told him the u.s.s. turner joy is docked up in bremerton(the maddox was sold to the chinese and then scrapped) and he said he wouldnt mind seeing it again.

Fantastic opportunity. Last month I had lunch with two Dustoff pilots and a gent who glidered into Normandy - he was there to get in the resistance and make sure the Vichy didn't destroy records.

The only time I open my mouth is to encourage guys like this to keep talking.

An excellent book on riverine warfare in Vietnam is, 'Brown Water, Black Berets'. I don't recall the authors name.

I had the great pleasure of serving with W4 Danny Bird, a highly decorated riverine veteran. He was the ships Bos'un when I was the Air Boss on an amphip.

He is a Rappahannock Indian and for some reason took pity on my dumb a$$ and kept me out of trouble. Solid man, great friend.

Edit: My wife's mother remarried after her divorce and luckily found a gent that spent three years on PT boats in the Pacific. What a great dude.
