2002 BMW 745i
Anyone know these cars?
My neighbour knows I'm a "car guy" and asked whether I might be interested in buying his extremely low mileage 745i for a tiny amount of money. So tiny I'm tempted to buy the thing even though I don't need it. He's the first owner. The car is a gorgeous color combination. Always garaged etc etc. For less than the price of a new Toyota Corolla this pristine Banglemobile might be a nice car to tool around in for a bit. What says the brain trust?

E85/86 chassis code 745I...not a car that has aged well hence the tiny price. More of a cruiser with 325hp and 4,500lbs to carry and must be run on Premium. I am not sure what "tiny" is...but if it is that small..I say go for it. I would not want to fix one...if the miles are super low then you might be fine.

Hey Dot,
If you pass, would you mind passing on the opportunity to a fellow Pelican? I DO need a new car (still driving the '99 Passat I bought new), and it is starting to look like a college kid's car. I actually like that model year, and I am very picky about finding a very low mileage, well cared-for replacement for my daily driver. I will keep my next car for 10 years, so I would like to get into car like this that can be an improvement over what I have now and still last a long time. I am also interested in hearing any stories about reliability and pro's/con's on these models as well. Thanks in advance. My apologies if you feel I have intruded or hi-jacked in any way. JA

They are fine big cars....but you'd better hope you don't have a mechanical failure. There are anecdotal instances of transmission problems...at $12K-14K for a replacement not an eay pill to swallow. OTOH I know of 7 series going 200K+ miles with no problems. Expect struts at 70K miles, rotors at about the same time. Interiors hold up well. Uber clean low mileage (say 30K miles) go for around $20K or even a bit less. Wonderful long distance cruisers that feel like they were machined out of a single piece of billet.

I've heard a lot about the "iDrive" system in these cars.
Are they really that hard to use?

I did a test drive of a '06 535 last week. Hated the I Drive. Not hard to use, just scroll thru several menus to locate the fan switch and crank it up a notch.......A big step backwards........

Pretty cars, and comfortable.
Way, way, WAY too much expensive electronics crap in them to break/go wrong. I wouldn't touch one for that reason - same with any BMW newer than about 1998 or so. It has gotten really ridiculous with those cars. When they work, they're awesome but I wouldn't dare get in one without a warranty.

Never buy the 1st year of a new body style. 2002's had issues with cooling and a water seal in the engine that requires complete engine replacement. My stepfather loves his so much that he just replaced his engine with a nice repro for $15000!

In my opinion. NO. I have used one on an 06 M5 and currently have in on my 08 550i. It's like handing your laptop to one of your parents that don't use computers and asking them to navigate it. Some pick it up quickly, others struggle. Most newer cars use some kind of central based controls to access many of the cars functions. My MDX is similar to the BMW's.
