Is 10 cars too many for a family??

So my insurance man flipped out on me today. I called him, and was considering getting back repair/towing plates for the buisness. I cancelled them about 3 years ago, as I was not using them as much, and the insurance is a killer. I am finding more and more of a need for them nowadays so I am going to reinstate them.
He said he had to list all of my personal vehicles to quote the policy. I gave him the list, 10 cars. All are currently inspected/ insured and operational and on the road at any given time.
He freaked. He preached to me the idiocy of this. He just could not believe that one family could in any way justify 10 cars.
I tried to explain to him that I was a car enthusiast, that 5 of them were more or less hobby type cars that see minimal use. Two work trucks for the side business, and three daily driver type cars. All are owned and paid for, no loans, carry current insurance, and are inspected. Insurance and maintenance are all that it takes to keep them running.
He even called me back later in the day when he was not as busy, and told me " seriously kid, think about what I am saying, you don't need all those cars"
Everything I own, I bought on the cheap, and put back together myself. I have always taken pretty good care of my stuff, so I usually have it for long periods of time. A few times when we have gotten a new car to replace a high miler ex...( 200,000 mile volvo), I just kept the old car, and ran it as a spare instead of selling it cheap because of the high miles.
Am I out line? , out of control? He seemed concerned.

Hey, whatever floats a family's boat...as long as I'm not asked to help pay for it through taxes. I personally wouldn't want the hassles that go with caring for 10 cars, but if somebody else wants to have 10 cars, why not?

I don't think whether or not you have 10 cars is any of his business on a personal level.

I could see why he would care for insurance purposes whether they are garaged or just parked on the street. That would make sense for an ins. co. to know before insuring your cars.

If you can afford 10 cars, then do what makes you happy.

but,

My 2 cents (and again, this isn't any of my business, but you asked): I wouldn't have any more cars than I really use. If I had 5 hobby cars, I would think about paring down to 2 or 3 and really concentrating on making those 2-3 cars really nice and using them often. Or preferably investing the difference in my retirement so I could have ten cars when I don't have to go to work any more.

I'd be looking for a new insurance guy.

Does he want the business, or not?

I have a buddy with about 50 cars, 30 of which are Ferraris and Porsches. He has a fulltime guy whose job it is to go back and forth to DMV, arrange maintenance and stretch their legs. If you can afford it, why not? It's not like having 10 cars means you're driving all 10 at the same time. If they belonged to 10 different people, then they could actually be driven at the same time.

If you have 10 cars, several of them should be able to be insured with a classic car ins co. Your agent or any other doesn't need to know about them. Keep your business and personal stuff separate for tax and other reasons. The tow truck should be on your business general liability policy. You should have 2 other cars insured for commuting, etc. That is if you are a 2-car family.

The rest are "collectibles."

The first policy I bought after college was from an Allstate lady. A couple of days later I got a card in the mail from her on investment planning. When the policy was up, I went to another company. Maybe your guy does the same on the side?

10 it not too many (or enough )
I agree with the others that asked if he wants your money or not. I have 5 cars all road ready; one sits in the garage most of the time so it's not fully covered but my insurance agent has never said a word.
In fact the only time they ever said anything was when I asked about getting a policy that would cover me no matter what or whose car I was driving. they told me they would have to right the policy as if I was driving a multi-million dollar car JIC I did. $$$$

I'll bet he's offended by your carbon footprint. If he drives a Prius, I'd fire him.

Does anyone have speeder's quote about 'burning dead dinosaurs' handy? I'd give him that line right before I fired him

That's what I'm thinking. Tell him to mind his own business, and then can him. Seriously. He might mess with you if you have a claim.

You'd think he'd be very happy to have a customer with 10 vehicles! He is selling you insurance on them.
