Apple iOS 4 - anyone update yet?
I'm updating my 3GS now...if you're not living on the edge - you're taking up too much space!
:D |
I just updated my wife's phone. Can't do mine until the new jailbreak is released.
So far, the folders and the digi zoom on the camera is all that I have played with. The new inbox should be helpful if you have several. accounts. |
A little anti climactic so far - the digital zoom is interesting but digital zoom is always lame.
Always. I don't think the 3GS will notice a lot of general difference. I only have one mail box on mine so no big deal there. My wife's 3G though - she has an exchange mailbox on hers as well as a few pop mailboxes... |
I updated my 3GS about an hour ago. So far I like the folders and the changes to Mail. The consolidated inbox is long overdue, and the threaded emails are also handy. It's oddly satisfying deleting a thread of 15 or so emails with one swipe.
|
I'm updating mine now as I'm having a problem with my phone. It won't turn on unless it's hooked up to the charger or computer. And even then, I have to press the home and on/off button in multiple ways to get it started. I'm thinking the battery might be shot after 18 minths.
Any ideas? |
Mike,
Any performance issues running iOS4 on a regular 3G? |
I haven't updated the wife's 3G yet - I'm not sure I am going to - generally speaking when you do one of these updates - regardless of performance you can't go back...
|
Finishing my 3G tonight.
Will report tomorrow. Not a lot for he 3G but will likely get the 4 shortly so figure what the hell. |
I started but then my son hijacked the PC, LOL.
I have no interest in the combined inbox feature, but the app folders thing is sorely needed. I'm due to pick up an iPhone 4 on Thursday but may bail-out if the lines are as insane as I anticipate. There may be people camped-out there now for all I know. Of course at the Santa Monica store, there are ALWAYS people sleeping outside so it would be hard to detect a change! |
Oh oh...updated to OS4 and just purchased and audio book. Now when I open iPod or iTunes to find the download the phone opens the app then shuts down the app after a few seconds goes to the main.
Anyone try to open a downloaded audio book or iTunes since you updated? |
I like the folders, the zoom is lame (as expected), I have not figured out multitasking yet (maybe it's only for certain apps) and that's pretty much it. Overall, the most important thing is - it does not seem slower!
I'm waiting to hear about 3G upgrades...My wife's coworker upgraded hers which has the same stupid email setup as my wife's so if that goes well - we'll upgrade hers. My buddy is buying a (4) model and I Think I'm just going to buy his 3GS for the wife instead of a (4). |
I upgraded my 3G this evening. Like it warned, it wiped a few pictures that I had put on the phone. Everything I took from the phone was still there. My music is gone as well... I have my phone pick up email from my own email server out of my house and everything was fine, other than the fact it deleted all the old email that I kept. The main app I use for rollerblading did not crap out like it did before, but I noticed that it seemed to be okay for a few days if I hard cycled the phone anyway, so I won't be sure if it's anymore stable for a few days.
Mike, if I read things correctly, multitasking only works with certain Apple apps at the moment and developers would have to write in the code to throw their apps in the background. |
Mine keeps locking up while adding some trimmed something or other. Meh, as long as it makes phone calls and I still have my aeroweather app.
|
Did my 3G. Everything works as before. Can't see anything new yet.
|
Is it even worth doing it on a 3G??
|
This sucks. I can't find any info online about why iPod is crapping out everytime I try to use it on the phone after the update.
|
Have you tried a reboot? Sometimes ram gets tied up and apps start to crash.
Rebooting shuts everything down. If that doesn't work then it is time to restore. |
Rebooted several times..no dice. Can't be specific to my phone.

re-synch'd the phone with iTunes and now iPod appears to work.
The mail thing is kind funky to have redundant inboxes and accounts listed on the same screen. I like the combined inbox feature, but I'm not sure it's a must have. |
3GS here
Didn't lose music, but I can't listen to I Heart Radio and open email at the same time. Will play iPod feature and check email however. Didn't lose music, |
Multitasking for updated apps (Evernote, Pandora) works well. Standard IPOD controls for supported apps (Pandora.). 'Trash to Archive' for gmail/gapps accounts.
I've been running a developer copy of iOS 4 on a 3GS for a couple weeks now, nice and stable, no issues. Digital zoom actually works well for macro shots. Cotton weave up close: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1277232445.jpg |
No longer syncs contacts with my google apps email account... restoring back :-/
|
No problems here....3GS
|
Lost my songs, apps, google email accounts, and for some reason, it downloading every email I ever got since owning it. Not sure about the multi eamil set up. What's the point? Says I have about 5k emails to download on my Bellsouth email accounts, which I've seen and deleted ages ago. An anti-spam feature would be nice. It's caught on my laptop, but is sent to my phone.
Of course the main problem is my battery or something died. It only works when plugged in and and even then sparadically (sp?). Apple is sending me a new phone, BUT if there is ANY moisture detected, then the extended warranty is voided and they charge my card for a new phone. It's never been wet, etc., but working outside, I sweat all over it during the summer. If they charge me, the new one might be going back depending on price. I can get a new 3G at AT&T for $99. One of the moisture strips is exposed at the bottom of the phone where you plug your cord in. The other is inside the headphone jack. Not sure if there is one inside. |
Not good, the upgrade hung itunes... It put everything back when I retried, but made my 3G waaay slower and the apps are crashing. :(
Don't upgrade wait for 4.1 or 4.2 |
no issues at all, 3GS.
|
I did my 3GS last nite and like the folder thing as well as the email inbox/account screen. So far I don't see the multitasking as a big deal except for Pandora. Most other apps I use are interactive and have no purpose/benefit running in the background.
I may bail-out on picking up my 4 on Thursday and just mail order one. Unfortunately delivery was not presented as an option when I pre-ordered it, although I guess it was an option for a bunch of other people. |
Upgraded my 3G yesterday and jailbroke with Redsn0w. Multitasking running just fine with Pandora and iPod. Going to try to unlock today. Then I will sell and use the money for the iPhone 4 upgrade.
|
seems ok but how do you get the tethering to work?
|
Hmm, seems like I'm waiting for v2

Drag one app that you want it a folder on top of another app that you want in the same folder... Viola... Folder created....

Well, been using it a few days now and the only thing so far is that it downloads my emails over and over again. The same email just gets added to the 'thread' with the same subject - it's strange. I have the iphone leave the email up there on the server. My computer, which is my primary email device leaves it up there for 10 days and then takes it down (overly cautious safety precaution in case my computer dies - habit I started years ago).
|
Definitely seems more trouble than it's worth for the 3G. I have two messages (no content whatsoever) that just keep reappearing and I can't edit/ highlight to delete. Any recommendations for eliminating would be appreciated.
They disappear for a while when I sync and then reappear. PITA, guess I'll have to get new iphone4 to make them go away permanently. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1277487182.jpg |
Last weekend I was at a Grid Computing conference in Chicago and probably 90% of the attendees (academic types) were sporting Apple hardware. The hotel WiFi took a hit as 100 or so folks were all eagerly downloading OS4. Three guys in my working group updated their iPhone OS and 2 of them experienced crashing, flickering screens, and similar bad behavior. Took them all day to get it all sorted. So much for the bug free Apple experience...
|
I updated my wife's new bootrom 3GS. I thought it was problem free until a few days ago the emails stopped being readable. The emails would come through and be previewed but when opened the text was not visible.
I restored iOS4 - same issue. Rebooted 4-5 times and now it works. I am a big Apple fan but everytime I hear 'Apple just works' I shake my head and think to myself 'newbie'. Apple makes plenty of mistakes, the faithful choose to give them a pass most of the time. Had to reboot my iPad this morning - it locked up 20 seconds after I woke it up. |

Reloaded iOS4 (1) time.
To reboot, you press the power button and home button at the same time and hold them until the little white apple shows up - then release. |
