Dog Poop - Thoughts?

An earlier thread got me thinking. We have 3 large dogs. Lots of poop. Had yard fenced in with 5' wood privacy fence. There's a line of tall evergreens directly behind back fence. My property line extends about 4' beyond the back fence, where the tall evergreens are. No house directly behind...a big empty lot that is part of a property with a house a few hundred feet away. I do have neighbors on both sides of me with no view/access to ground zero.

Any reason I shouldn't toss my poop over the fence? It's still my property and the landing zone is near the base of that line of large evergreens. Have done it a few times, but somehow feel guilty. Man...it's a whole lot easier than bagging all that shat and letting it ferment in the trash can all week.

I grew up with Great Danes, therefore, great poop. There is an area at the back of my parents property that does abut a neighbor, but it's unused by all. The dog had the run back there and would crap and when I was forced to shovel crap from the back lawns, I'd toss them to that back area. No problems at all.

There's gotta be a way to grind it up, add a little home brewed methanol to it and make fuel for your lawn mower.

We have two daschunds. Their poop will leave a greener area in the grass just a few weeks after the deposit. They only get dry dog food and never table scraps to eat. It biodegrades in a few weeks. I don't care what that web site says. We only pick it up in the winter time.

I would think with 3 dogs you would smell it near your house if you tossed it there all the time.

Don't be lazy! scoop your poop- if not for yourself but for your neighbours-nobody wants to smell your dogs crap while trying to enjoy a nice bbq in the backyard!

If I ever lived in a place that the yard was small enough to require picking up my outside dog's land mines, I think I would have to slit my wrists. Same goes for bagging lawn clippings.

Had Mastiffs. Similar yard config as you. 100 ft of woods separating yards. Tempting to toss there. It attracts rats. Not something you want. YMMV.

I have a very similar setup as you describe, and tried throwing it over the fence for about a year. It never bothered me until one day when I had a big group of friends over for a cookout and we were playing boccie ball. Whenever we got to the back of the yard everyone would ask where that ***** smell was coming from. And let me tell you, within a ~30 radius of that corner, it smelled BAD. Like a septic system. Ever since I have scooped it up and put it in well sealed trash bags. I instantly felt bad for all of my neighbors who share that corner of my yard.

Slightly away from the original topic, but my brother (the vet) recommends sprinkling their food with a bit of plain Adolph's meat tenderizer. The enzymes will apparently result in greater digestive breakdown and piles will be smaller and more compact.

And for those of you spending a fortune on monthly heartworm meds, look into purchasing liquid Ivermectin from a cattle/farm coop. About $50 for a liter. Same ingredient in HeartGuard. Only takes a few drops once a month orally and is the same protection. Can't OD the dogs on it (well a gallon could I suppose), it has an indefinite shelf life. A liter will treat an average size dog for about 213 years. But you didn't hear this from me.

What about burying it? I always wondered why not just dig a hole a couple feet deep, fill w/ DS and re-fill hole. Wouldn't it de-compose underground and become dirt or mulch?

We have two Dachshunds; my wife bags the poo every few weeks but when I use the scooper I tend to toss it into the back 40, attempting to set new records with every throw. We own some of the property over the fence so I don't feel too bad about it.
