A lot of car for the money? 87 928S4 w/ 66K miles for $9750?

It seems like a lot of car for under $10K, being an exotic and all

1987 Porsche 928 S4 Low Miles

1987 Porsche 928 S4, Auto, only 66k miles, red with black leather, great condition, maintenance records, $9750 or best reasonable offer

Looks nice to me. The flagship of the marque, you know.

This really gets my goat too.

Rare 1989 Porsche 928 GT 5 Spd

You can kid Bill all you want, but 21 years ago, that was an awfully mean vehicle. When I was considering a pcar, I looked at a really nice S4 and considered it until I found out how expensive and unobtainable many parts are.

S4 is the one that I would buy if I had the money. These are truly wonderful driving cars. Not a huge auto trans fan, but it works VERY well in this car.

There's one here in town for sale for 7K, but it is not as nice as the one you are posting about.

The thread about the 10K future collectible? You found one.

I agree Angela. I wasn't too tongue-in-cheek about it, no green font.
You'd have to try very hard to find a nicer 928 for under $10K
Of course, most 928's were auto and the 5.0 made enough torque to pull it off.
I'd really like to have this car in my stable, I'm just not sure what I'd do with it.

When I was involved in a Porsche 3-way...

I used the 944 as my daily driver, the 911 targa as my weekend fun car, and the 928 for road trips or a night on the town. The luxury aspects stand up to time as well as the performance.

If I ever return to the Porsche fold, the roster will include a 928S4 (as well as a 944S2 and 911 cab), all in black, following the same usage patterns.

Auto trans kills value on those. 5 speeds command much more.

All:

How much would it cost to fit a manual transmission?

How about a respray in silver/metallic gray?

Then you'd have a sweet ride...

Cheers,

Paul.

It's a 4 speed automatic in thse cars built by Mercedes Benz. Very robust and is really not a hinderance tot he cars performance. With the torque curve of these 32Valve motors being huge and flat as a pool table. There is no reason to NEED a 5 speed manual.

I would love to have that car. Just be sure all the little widgets work or it will drive you crazy. windows locks wipers A/C controller etc.

How's that quote go? "The most expensive car you can buy is an inexpensive Porsche". Something along those lines.

I was just flipping through an old Excellence (Dec '09) last night, and the used car market update was about the 928. Sounds like most 928s were sold with the auto trans. and the author thought it was appropriate in this type of car (a GT, as opposed to a sportscar). Price range: $10-15K. One bit of advice was to make sure the cam-drive timing belts had been replaced every 30-45K miles.

I don't know if I'd buy it just to buy it, as it seems to be nicely priced. But if you're looking for a GT Porsche, the car looks like a fairly good deal.

I remember reading that the clutches on the manual wore out quickly, and the auto sort of solved that problem.

Moot point for the car listed in the OP, but the Excellence article seemed to suggest that the clutch problem was with pre-87 cars.

The early 5 speeds used the twin disc clutch that cost a ton and caused problems. The early manuals also had synchro problems. I had a friend with a 1984 928S 5 speed and he sunk $6K into a new clutch and rebuilt synchros. This was in 1994.

The 85 and later trannys have Borg Warner syncros, and are just about bullet proof. The Mercedes transmissions can easily handle as much power as supercharged 928 can put out, but you have to watch out for throw out bearing failure on a 928 automatic, where the driveshaft puts pressure on the flexplate and ruins the engine.

That could be a very good car. PPI, PPI, PPI.

That's German for CYA.

The 928S4 is the single greatest bang for the performance buck on earth today, and probably by a very large margin.
