Buy the 997 water pumper lima bean. Keep it for a year or two, then find a year old 2011 Shelby GT500 with the aluminum block that has already taken the new car depreciation hit.

That, good sir, sounds like a plan.

Only problem with short term ownership of a 997 is that the taxes will kill any point in that idea. Unless you know a way around that. Errrr, also... you might find yourself unable to bear letting go of it. I might even encourage it IF you find one with the "good" engine. Otherwise it is garbage. Sorry, but someone has to point out that Porsche hasn't been exactly the quality king of the industry with the previous generation of engines.

I have been keeping an eye out for a low-mileage 997 Carrera S coupe, and just found the perfect car in Oregon. Built in 2006, it has travelled only 2,600 miles, and is in as-new condition. One elderly owner, heated garage, all the right options, various factory stickers still in place, A1 PPI etc. etc. It's quite superb really and I couldn't be more pleased. I am bringing her home today—on B roads of course—and it has been a brilliant drive. Here are a couple of pics from en-route.

it is very much too easy to get the rear end to break loose with the mustang. great performance in a straight line. zero finesse. i've owned mustangs and porsche's. i like both. i'll be sticking with porsche.

But I still have enormous respect for the new 5.0 liter Mustang.

I've avoided grey and black cars all of my life. Always preferred colours. But this car was just so perfect in all other respects, that I decided I could live with the colour (Seal Grey).

It does have one advantage though: no one notices you in a grey car. Great stealth colour.

Nice car, I've always liked those wheels. That thing is essentially brand new. When the day comes for me, I'll probably be looking for the opposite: a high-miles/dinged-up example that can be tracked w/o concern and parked at Home Depot between Dodge PUs like my 996. They are phenomenal cars that do not reveal their true toughness until you mile them up and nothing breaks. My 996 had 200k+ and barely a rattle.

First a litte tale.

In the 90s I had finally finished up a 5 year 73 RS restoration. It was restored to be a great driver with a touch of patina and I loved it. I met my brother in Monterey for the historics and it was the first time he had seen it since it's former persona as a well worn our RS. He loved it and wrung its neck a bit. We came back to our hotel, which was an out of the way ex-condo with individual garages. He pulled into the garage..not noticing they had installed bump stops to prevent the great unwashed from hitting the walls...and proceeded to crunch the pristine RS front spoiler. He looked at me and, instead of apologizing, said "Now you can relax and ENJOY the damn thing".

Your S is lovely. I worry that it is TOO pristine and you may get sucked into trying to keep it that way instead of ENJOYING and USING it!!! It won't be worth that much less if you use it as the old time Porsche family would have wanted and you will have wonderful memories that will never exist if it remains a pristine, exceptionally low mile, S....
