It's mostly for drama queens and ambulance chaser lawyers.
People trying to hit the civil court lottery.

Once in a while someone actually has an asbestos related cancer, prolly 1 out of 1000 of those who sue.

BTW I'm right smack dab in the middle of that target audience. I worked around asbestos insulation many times in the 80's in refineries, power plants, shipyards, etc.
Too bad I'm not a scumbag liar, I'd prolly be rich right now.

My grandfather got a surprise check in the mail back in the 90's--a settlement from the US gov't for the asbestos he was exposed to while working in the Brooklyn Navy Yard during WW2. He's 93 now and in better shape than I am...

I get a chest xray every 2 years and it gets read by a miso specialist since I was in the Navy for over 20 years and did a lot of overhauls so besides all the radiation I got there is a chance of the miso based lung cancer. The problem the VA and my doctor tell me is that if it is detected a short while later you die as there is no cure.

What's the point of checking, then?

"Around 600 cases of mesothelioma are recorded every year in Australia. It is expected that in the next 10-15 years, some 13000 more mesothelioma cases will be recorded."

"Because of the long latency period of nearly 20 to 30 years".

But we'll just call these 600 people 'drama queens'.

He is referring to the commercials that play non-stop on our TV here.

I'm sure that his smoking didn't help but he died from mesothelioma which is caused by asbestos exposure.

Take a look at asbestosis...............

If you look at an asbestos fiber under a microscope this mineral looks like a bone. Its so light it can stay airborne for decades! One big source is the "friable" stuff that was used in pipe wrapping that over time crumbled and got loose. A ton of work has been done to reseal or remove this stuff the last several decades. Steve McQueen worked in the ship yards and used to carry sacks of pure asbestos around. His exposure to the stuff over time sealed his fate. You'd hear stories of kids greeting their dad when he got home from the factory full of asbestos fibers on his clothes. That big hug and exposure over time led to offspring mesothelioma over the years. I do not know if data is available relative to exposure limits.

I am sure everyone who worked on brakes (asbestos), replaced roof shingles, vinyl flooring, old popcorn ceilings, etc., have asked the question about exposure one time or another. A chest xray be the right move.

Warren Zevon died from it. Chain smoker!

"Shadows are fallin' and I'm runnin' out of breath
Keep me in your heart for a while
If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for a while

When you get up in the mornin' and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for a while
There's a train leavin' nightly called "When All is Said and Done"
Keep me in your heart for a while"

Back in the '80s I had a tenant who worked at NASCO stripping asbestos from ships. I think he may have been illegal but didn't know for sure, and maybe a bunch of his coworkers were too. He had a wife & two kids. Nice guy, and I told him at the time he should be looking for another job away from asbestos. He said the pay was better than most other jobs he could get. When I see those commercials, I wonder if he's still alive.

I had a job just after college monitoring air quality in asbestos abatement job sites. I never had to go inside the areas closed off with the plastic drapes. My boss was later killed when the first plane hit his office window in the WTC on 9/11. Some folks' numbers are up, no matter how healthy you try to live.

Bite me. I never said the disease didn't exist. I never said people don't die from it. I implied that it's used by many as a scam to get rich for nothing, there are thousands of lawsuits for this that are baseless. the disease is too often used by low-lifes, many more than the people hwo actually have the disease. It's the hot-button lawsuit magnet of the day, just like mold was 10 years ago.

I get phone calls, stuff in the mail, e-mails all the stinking time from lawyers who want to "represent me" and get me a settlement for "future damages".
Not sure how they got my info but like I said, I worked around asbestos when I was younger, from 1980 to around 1995. Must be some gummint list or something.

BTW, I've worked in this industry for 30 years. I've been to lots of funerals for co-workers over the years, NEVER for one related to mesothelioma. I personally do not know ANYONE who has contracted mesothelioma or who had died from it. I personally do not know ANYONE who has ever had any form of asbestos-related disease.

I've seen 4 coworkers die from colon cancer, 6 from heart attacks, two from motorcycle accidents, two from car wrecks, two from suicide, two were murdered, one was shot by a cop, but none from any form of asbestos-related illness.
I'm not saying it doesn't happen. But I believe it is much more rare than we are led to believe. I'd bet more people die from lightening strikes than asbestos.

Wouldn't it be ironic if Sammy or someone close to him got this disease. And no, I'm not wishing it. But it would be ironic.
