but its more fun to mind other people's business. Won't someone think of the children?!?!?

I forgot.

I taught OSHA safety for five years, but that is a new one on me. Worth knowing, IMO.

This is serious, by the way.

She's got ear protection and the fetus doesn't. The fetus is in fluid that conducts sound amazingly well. Do you know how incredibly delicate the developing inner ear structures are in a fetus?

Lots of studies have demonstrated fetal hearing loss at far lower levels than a drag strip.

Moses, when my wife was pregnant she had a lot of ultrasounds done and hearing loss was one of the concerns. My son does have a hearing loss, but not from ultrasounds.

Ultrasound is a different wavelength. It is not audible and non-cavitating. It has a 50 year safety record with millions of individuals having undergone extensive prenatal ultrasound. These are huge numbers. If there was a problem with ultrasound and hearing loss we would have known about it a long time ago.

Moses, I understand ultrasound is a UHF (ultra high frequency) but never thought about the dB level. I can't imagine it's very high.

BTW, if you've never been to the NHRA and you're a car guy, you need to go once in your life, at least. Watching it on the TV you have NO IDEA the amount of power going down that track. I mean NO IDEA at all.

I am talking a lot of exposure a couple of hours a week.

Mother would probably think to herself: "I wonder if it was those decels that the OB brushed off during labor that caused that?"

Fixed it for you (and Moses). ;)

Yes, that godawful tattoo is disturbing. Having gone to the races since before I was born, /i can report no hearing problems outside of the typical male "selective hearing." And yes, I sat through the unmuffled Can Am, 911's, and those horribly sounding rotaries to boot.

Christ, I forgot how loud those Mazda-powered sports racers always are. And usually driven by some guy at the tail end of the field.

At best...

As an aside, So you guys are saying I should quit sneaking up on pregnant women with an airhorn??

LeeH 07-19-2010 06:47 AM

When the kid grows up he/she will be in therapy for PTSD and not be able to tell the therpist what caused it.

flatbutt 07-19-2010 10:38 AM

Moses continues to impress.

trekkor 07-19-2010 10:49 AM

Here's a little video I shot from track side.
Turn up the volume to the highest setting on the most powerful equipment you have and it will not be as loud as it was live!
