44 5th! family came in 1863 to Downry from Gergia.

Seems that there was a war that my non land owner kin wanted nothing to do with.

I would love to see the language of that actual rule. It would change my driving habits. I don't recall being tested on it in my driver's ed or renewal and I have not been able to find it written anywhere.

Show me the law.

the sign says 'Speed limit 65' not 'Speed limit 65 unless there is nobody in front of you'.

We have the same rule here, but it's never enforced, unfortunately.

That's a lot of the problem in CA, the damn immigrants from Gergia.

Yes, that is the exact mantra of every 80 yr old Buick driver doing 65 in the fast lane (while the rest of traffic is flowing 75-80).

NOT what we are talking about here though. I was not holding court in the fast lane at 65, I do not propose it nor do I support it. So what is your point?

I have yet to hear that the "keeping up with the flow of traffic" line worked to get out of a speeding ticket.

CA has a "basic speed law." It essentially means that you can't go faster than the conditions warrant. Hence you can get a ticket for doing the speed limit (or under) in fog, a downpour, etc. It does not allow you to go over the speed limit however.

I've driven all over this country and everybody drives like crap (including here in WI).
That said and with the facts given I agree with Mike in this case.
My general rules are as such; Far left lane is for passing only (long live Canada law), avoid far right lane due too many slow drivers and limit speeding to 5 over (like others I don't want or need any tickets).

968rz 07-19-2010 02:04 PM

I try to respect others driving styles and adapt IF possible (and not too illegal). Most freeways here are 3 lanes with no HOV so I run the center lane at 5 over max, when I reach a slower car in this lane I move left; pass and move back. When someone rushes up and tailgates me in the center lane I hold steady for quite awhile waiting for them to respectfully move over and pass, if they choose to continue their bumper riding they WILL see red (as in tail lights) and no I don't feel bad and yes I've been hit (they have paid dearly).
Just sayin' SmileWavy

Once we get out of our own metropolitan area and beyond the most distant suburbs, it gets a lot better. Not the way it was 20 years ago out on the open road, but better.

The last long road trip I made, and I've made many, I put the car on CC at about 75, maybe 73. Who knows given accuracy. I could roll in the right lane of a 4 lane highway and stay steady, even with the trucks. Of course, the trucks had to gear down on grades, so I'd move past in the left lane.

I didn't bother to speed up when I moved over with plenty of room just because some jerkbite in a Hummer came up on me a ton. (Make that 3 tons.) I just got back over as quickly as was safe.

Now, I drive long stints, 4 hours minimum. Said Hummer man goes by me 4 times in 4 hours.

'nough said.

Tidybuoy 07-19-2010 02:23 PM

I only tailgate if the guy in front has options to move over. But if he's doing 70 with several cars in front of him, I keep my distance.

70 is generally way too slow for me.

That being said, if someone tailgates me and I have no option for moving over (which I usually do if I don't feel like going faster), I have the perfect trick....I turn on my window washers and it generally sprays the car behind me. There's nothing more satisfying than seeing a tailgater back off and then use his wipers to remove my spray :) Works equally well on a spotless Mercedes or a filthy smeared windows beater.

Is that what serves as entertainment in Fresno?

That's the sane, reasonable thing to do. You shouldn't be expected to drive faster than you believe is safe (unless your under the road minimum). Likewise, you shouldn't hold up traffic in any lane if you can move left.

I hate the shirt-for-brains who tailgates me when I'm doing 80 in the left lane, passing cars doing 65 in the right lane. What does he think I'm going to do, levitate? I couldn't slow down to 65 and move right if I wanted - he'd be in my trunk. And I'm not going to speed up. I'm in the front of the line - driving the car the radar is going to paint. He can be patient until I can move right and let him by.
