Anyone own Ford Ranger?

I just acquired a 2005 Ford Ranger Edge, automatic transmission, without a manual.

Anyone with a manual can tell me what octan is recommended by manufacture? I don't want to spend $ on 91 for it, but don't want to go below what manufacture recommended.

Also, the oil cap says 5-20. All my others cars are using 5-30. Can I use 5-30 on this ranger? Any damage even with low chance?

Thank you.

Ranger

Don't own a Ranger but have had several F150's
Per my dealer.....Ford means 5w/20 useage only.
My F150 oil cap has 5w/20 and asked my dealer if I should go to 5w/30 since I tow a trailer. He said don't as the engine is designed for that oil and that oil only

If you use 5w-30, it may reduce fuel economy slightly, that is all.

Cindy's Ranger is a '99 XLT 4.0 engine with automatic. It's owner's manual says to run regular 87... 5-30 should work fine, especially if you go with a synthetic.

We bought new, and with regular service, it has been a remarkably trouble free rig. We actually prefer it for running around on short trips, shopping errands, etc.

I have always used Motorcraft 5W-20 in my Fords.

You can get it at WalMart for about $2 / qt.

Had an 85 V6 Ranger for 13 years and 165,000 miles, still running fine just wanted something new....used Castrol 20/50 and poured 87 Octane ARCO into it...

Had the 5 speed manual...trans blew up at 53000 (factory used ATF Fluid) ...rebuilt..and used 90 weight....never a problem again...only on cold mornings would the trans be stiff for the first coupla shifts...

In 13 years I figure I spent 5K on maintence and repairs...includes tires & batterys and everything else.

It's a synthetic blend...and many on Mustang boards swear by the stuff...I use Mobil one, but probably just out of habit.

Thanks guys. I usually use valvoline 5-30. Not sure if there is such valvoline 5-20. I'll check.

Yes, this truck is immediately becoming my main driver for now. I never thought that it could. I usually like small/sport car. Last year, I bought the minivan. I slowly like it more but I only take out when I need to take my whole family in one vehicle. It took is a long time to get use to the van. The truck, immeditely becoming convenience vehicle, eventhough body roll is bad and it bounces like a horse. Amazing.

Thanks again.

They are $pendy...but you might try a set of Edelbrock IAS shocks...they transformed our ranger so much, I didn't bother adding the sway bars I'd been thinking about.

Guy down the road recently bought a 2000 for $400.00 US. He has put a few thousand miles on the clock so far. Oh, and it looks terrible, like no one cared enough to take care of it. Engine sounds good though.
