I went through several bugs and busses/campers back in the day. As a matter of fact I just say my copy of "How to Keep Your VW Alive" a couple of weeks ago when I went through a box of old books. My favorite was a '65 I redid and used it as a daily driver for quite a while. It's the only car I've ever owned that got stolen. I just loved getting into that thing, cranking back the sun roof, and tooling to work. It was after it got stolen that I bought my first Porsche. If I could find one similar to it, I might buy it instantly.

I must have owned 25-30 VW's over the years. long ago, people used to give them to me or we would pay $25 or so for them, drive them home and cut them up to make dunebuggies. I've still got a couple Things, Karman Ghia, several buggies and many motors I'd like to get rid of. And someone's trying to give me a VW van i have no use for. The pink one pictured was my daughter's favorite car when she was tiny. she's still po'd at me for getting rid of it and not saving it for her. she learned quick what an "oh ***** handle" was for in that bug.

My fondest memory of bugs is hitching a ride in the '70s with 2 girls one January night. I got the back seat – with the heater on full blast because it was broken. The driver ‘bugged out’ on a patch of ice & careened into a snow bank on one side of the road. She wrenched the wheel & we slid across to the other side & slammed to a stop. We checked the car & all was well & we puttered on down the road for the 2 hour drive.

Anyone remember the gas heaters that came in these cars for a while?
You could heat a house with them—and a buddy of mine did. He bought four heaters from wreckers, built himself a log cabin, and stuck one of these heaters in each corner with a separate tank. Worked like a charm. That cabin was always warm. |
I was half owner of a bug for about 3 weeks when I was 15 , only drove it through the woods. My buddy who was the other owner rammed it about 20 feet into a swamp before it sunk. It sat there for a year , back half of the car sticking out, and we passed it every morning on the school bus.
I sort of have a soft spot for busses, and dream of doing a hot rod one someday. 3.6, fat fuchs, real low , you get the picture. I owned a 75 bus for a couple of years. I loved that thing, I was my first official parts chaser for my biz. I drove that thing all over the place. It could surely tell some stories if it was still around. |

After 2 years I still consider myself a new member. I think there's a trend since these amazing Porsche's have now become affordable. |
