fishing accident - dont look if sensitive
 

this is a first, and ironically i posted a thread about barbless hooks a few weeks ago but hadnt gotten around to removing them. been catching walleye off the dock all week. never caught em till this week and not too practiced in removing the hooks. well i got a big one and hooked it good and it thrashed hard and got me while unhooking. for a while i was attached to the fish and net as it thrashed with the hook in me. happened so fast it was like a hand grenade going off in my hand. not fun at all :eek::eek:

Reminds me of my first time fishing. I swung the rod back to cast and I ended up catching this massive forehead. My father was less than pleased and bled like a stuck pig! I was pretty young and that scared me off fishing for several years. I started fishing again in high school and then lost interest, but that's still one of my favorite (it's funny as hell now) fishing stories.

You didn't get this out yourself? The way to do it is to get some line around the hook that is in the flesh and pull back hard and fast. (Ask me how I know). That's why you never go fishing without beer.

Oh, I forgot - the other method, if it is close to the other side of the finger is to continue to push it through and then just cut off the tip with the barb. That one I don't know from experience.

the usual way i guess, which is to cut the hook thats exposed and push the tip and remainder of the hook up and out making another hole. tried pulling backwards but it was jammed because of the barb

the repala SSR-5 in red by the way is the most productive lure ive ever used. highly recommended

and no, couldnt do it myself. needed 30cc of nerve block so doc could work his magic

The hospital in Kenora, On has a huge collection of "donated" lures that have been gifted by various fishermen over the years.

With Walleyes throw a damp towel over their eyes before trying to remove any hooks. It calms them down and you can get a better grip on the body without removing the slime coat (if your realeasing them).

I had a 8 lbs one flip on me and drove a dorsal spine into the palm of my hand. Two days later I couldn't move my fingers. It left about a 1/8" of the spine. Didn't show up on xrays.

ill try that. i see Al Lindner on youtube catching all these walleyes and he just scoops em up by the gill plate and pops out the hook with 1 hand...it aint that easy i now understand

It all depends on where the hook is. I've had Walleyes swallow a SR9 Rapella. No way I'm sticking my hand in a gill plate with a trebble hook somewhere in there too. ;)

And gill plates can be a tad sharp. Paper cut sharp, not cut your fingers off sharp. :)

A friend of mine told me a story one time about a similar accident. He was canoeing in the Boundry Waters, days out. and the guy he was fishing with was casting his lure and it snaged his thumb. It went through his thumb and was poking out through his thumbnail. he said there was no way to pull it out, so he had to pull it through his thumb and thumbnail. Anyhow, hope you are feeling better.

cant imagine pulling it out alone or without nerve block. wow thats some manly stuff...even if i could manage to do it, i would be worried about doing too much damage to the tissue and nerves in there...and my only free hand was my left hand, and im right handed. i guess if your out in the wilderness, you gotta do what you gotta do.

its better than sawing off your arm with a swiss army knife i guess

one thing i know now, i will never get a fish hook in my body again. once in 38 years aint bad..

oh...the doctor when he took a look at the hook said, "oh ****, this is going to be a challenge!"....if its a challenge to an emergency department doctor, how the hell am i gonna get a hook out alone in the dark. no way, im no Rambo

hahhah. you forgot one step. you have to get someone to push down on the hook to release the barb. i have done this..BAD. i was tying on a plug, only it was the wrong plug. the one in my hand was already tied to a friend's rod. then he casted. OUCH!

we were not boating, on shore..beer. it ended bad. funny but bad.
