If it is the same car that was at Rennsport Reunion III, it is owned by Matt Drendel.

The 917/30 was the drendel car.

I was there racing my orange 914-6. Fun event, definitely my favorite of the year.

No, that would be Frank Beck in group 6. I wish I was as quick as him. I run in group 8 with all the smaller bore 914s and 911s.

Those small block Shelby's / Mustangs were some of the best sounding cars out there. I watched that group up the hill from turn five. The demo laps of the 917 were a yawn fest at best.

The guys from CobraAutomotive, a couple of rtrestorations Boss 302s and a silver 70(ish) Camaro seemed to be consistently pulling >8K RPM on some wacky compression ratios. Some of those guys were about 1-1.5 octaves above the others in Group 6.

Didn't get to return on Sunday for the racing but some were pushing pretty hard already on Friday. I'm not sure that much of it at the front is "just for fun."

A few years ago I was racing at Willow Springs and there were half a dozen "Trans-Am" Mustangs and they also revved some huge RPMs. I asked the owner of an engine company what the deal was as I sure didn't remember that back in 1966 and he said "today's technology is much better"! He had 3 engines on stands in the back of a large pickup and said the one closest to the rear was about $15k and would make you competitive and last all year, the one in the middle was about $30k and you could probably sit on the front row and last 3 or 4 weekends. The one closest to the cab was $75k and you would win but would only last ONE weekend! Sort of like many of the 2L challange Porsches I used to race with I guess........

Yeah, those Mustangs sounded like they had Cosworth F1 motors in them! So much for 'vintage' racing

I know it's not a P-car, but here I am with my second place award at the show. The first place award went to a silver 73 Targa from Nebraska. Mine is a 95 BMW M3. I was shocked to win because there were some very nice cars all over the place. All in all, a really great weekend. Speaking on engines, there was one Corvette with a REALLY high pitched sound. It just wasn't right to hear it that way.

My moment of Zen was early Friday afternoon.

There is a locally owned ex-Gerhard Berger Benetton B197 that has been a fixture at vintage events at RA for the past decade. It has been retrofitted with a Judd replacing the original Renault power, and routinely sets the fastest time of the day.

As I was walking towards it, out of the blue up walked Steve Matchett from the other side of the car, by himself. No idea why he was there. Although he's currently best known for his work on Speed TV's F1 broadcasts, I first knew him from his excellent 1995 book, Life in the Pit Lane a memoir of his time as a Benetton mechanic.

After complimenting the current staff that maintains the car on their work in adapting the chassis to a Judd engine for which it was not designed, he then proceeded to share tons of fascinating details and history of the car, and the thought processes at the time, much of which was news to the current stewards. He probably was there for a half hour sharing stories.

Truly a gracious guy.

I managed to remember to take one photo.:

Hmm Siebkens...
Last time I was there with the midwest R Gruppe, I remember laughing myself silly with the histories shared. A Mecca of sorts for the gearheads.

"so much for vintage racing"... Um, ya think? That yellow notchback Mustang shifted gears so fast it left me shaking my head. Not too mention its high pitched F1 whine. I long for the good old vintage racing days when they were raced "in period." Oh well, all in the name of finishing first.

A '95 M3 with four doors?
