please explain a regulator recitifier
I have a kohler 25 hp that has a chargin issue. I have chased it down to replace the stator and the battery and the regulator. the stator tests properly but I have now way of testing the regulator other then seeing it does not produce 14.5 volts which it should so my next question is why? whats going on in there? Any advice?

Bad or no grounds will muck up lots of things. Double ground it and enjoy.

Hey Ben, I would agree to check your grounds and also check to be sure you wired it back up properly. Did a quick search and found a few links about trubleshooting 25hp Kohlers. Here is one. http://www.lawnsite.com/archive/index.php/t-304862.html
Apparently 28+ volts should be coming from the stator which I assume you already checked for. If you are getting nothing out of the new regulator, I would assume bad ground or incorrect connections. Have you tried putting the old reulator back on? Maybe you got a bad one???? If you have an electric clutch for your mower deck, turning it on and off while the engine is running might help you measure voltage conditions under load.

Protect the connections from oxidation after the connection is made. This can wick up a wire and stay hidden. I've used vaseline in a pinch, but there are probably better products.

Yeah when I bought the machine it had no grounds in that area. it had just had a reman engine put on so I think they simple put the new engine on painted it up and sold it though it is in great shape the PO must have just forgot the ground. It finally clicked last night when I looked on line of new regulators and they came with a ground strap. Me forgetting the housing is plastic so no ground. problem solved thanks
