After paying $2.99/ box of 20 a couple years ago, $6.00/ box of 20 still is a bit steep to me. I still have 1000 or so rounds left of .223 and I have been leaving the gun in storage as shooting it is like lighting dlloar bills on fire lately. Our local Gander has been gouging customers severely in the past year. They were selling 550 rnd value packs of .22 plinking ammo for $24/box compared to Walmart's price of $18/box for the same stuff. I have pretty much decided I won't shop at Gander anymore even though they used to be competitive on gun prices (not any more).

I am guessing that .223 will drop much lower still over the next couple of years and when/if it does, I may take up "3 gun" competition. Until then, I will just dig the AR out for varmint control and maybe an occasional 30 round magazine dump just for kicks.

I can't afford ammo for my FAL, so I'm sitting on the 200 rounds of DAG and 200 rounds of Privi that I have, occasionally shoot a box out of my "loose" stuff (mix of nato surplus). Same with 45 ammo - sitting on 100 rem 230grn jhps and 200 w-w fmj. When I got my FAL 5 years ago SA surplus was $18 per 140 pack, shipping about $5 per pack if you bought in even number packages - I just couldn't justify $ for a butt load of ammo when I just spend $630 on the gun.

Been shooting a lot of 22 though - still have a few thou of that.

If you don't mind steel case, AIM Surplus has it for around $4.39 for a box of 20.
