Things That Ruin 'Driving'

My list for today:

1. GPS
2. Automatic transmissions
3. Congestion
4. Traffic signs that require you to come to a full stop
5. People that don't understand how a multi-lane road is supposed to work
6. Air conditioning
7. Traffic laws enacted solely to raise revenue

By 'consensus' I will add:

8. Cruise control

YMMV.

Feel free to debate or add....

I would like to add one since I drive 500 freeway miles a week...

8. People who can't drive a consistent speed on the freeway.

Agreed. But I would also add 'Cruise control' to my list.

Or how much extra space they need to pull out into traffic....

I love GPS. I don't need no stinkin' map.
Automatics are great for cruisin'.
Well, I don't know who likes congestion, so a big winner there.
5,6,7 good.
A/C? You don't own a black coupe, I guess. It's parked for the next 4 months except to show to buyers. If that car sits in the sun for 10 minutes, it doesn't cool off until the middle of the night. Absolutely miserable to drive if it's over 75 degrees outside and sunny.

My biggest peeve is when people don't know how to behave at a 4-way stop. No, you don't have to wait and stare at me until I come to a complete stop. After you stop, move on! If we get there together, try and figure out if you're on the left and freakin' yield, OK?

I always roll slowly when in a line of cars so I only have to come to complete stop once. Can anyone in this world figure out how that works instead of stopping 2, 4 or 10 times at each stop sign?

You list your 10 or 20 things that ruin driving. I'll just say everyone else on the road ruins driving.

Agreed, with A/C in your climate. Here I only 'need' it 10-20 days per year. I prefer to feel the air moving. If I'm actually moving.

And I should have specifies 'driving' as opposed to cruising. But once you get into 5th (or 6th) who cares? In heavy traffic, yea, I hate my manual.

I still consider the ability to look at a map and figure out where I am going (or have to go) a pleasant mental exercise. I like to think it separates me from the other morons out there.

Four-way stops are not necessary. They are installed by driving nannies.

Invariably that seems to involve someone texting or talking nowadays.

So I will add 'cellphones' to my list.

Just the fact that we can read a map sets us apart. I'm good with that. If the GPS breaks, I still have the map. I've used maps since beginning to drive.

Shoot, those maps had half the streets on them!

My list

1 Other people
-a People that don't understand a multilane 4-way stop sign and how to make it work efficiently
-b left lane bandits
-c people who have made themselves honorary deputies
-d people who drive fast in their big quiet cars, but ***** about folks in sporty fast looking cars
-e people who aren't thinking about their driving because they are texting, on the phone, eating, shaving, applying makeup, reading, etc...
2 boring cars
3 cars that isolate you too much from your surroundings
4 boring roads
5 stop signs/lights when there could be roundabouts (sp)

Automatic trannies aren't necessarily evil. A good auto can be nice, and can be fine for driving. There are a couple of different types of driving, spirited driving and driving for enjoyment of the environment, both aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, but I can do both in my miata independently.

The biggest problem we face when trying to enjoy driving is other folks, IMO.

Funny, I only read the first 2 or 3 posts, then created my list. Seems most of it was a repeat of something someone else had said.

Remember that you're defining "driving" as something you do for pleasure, whereas most other people drive with a purpose, to get somewhere. One is a means to and end, the other an end in and of itself. The most unfortunate thing that ruins driving is having to share the same road. That's why we have racetracks
