So I can go to a sail boat sale, buy a sale sail boat and sail said sale sail boat until I decide to put said sale sail boat up for sale as a previously sailed sale sail boat...yeah, that works.

How 'bout a punctuation challenge? Using only punctuation, make this string of words make (grammatically) correct sense:

Although John while Jim had had had had had had had had had had had a better effect on the teacher

The word is a condensed version of "previously recorded" and is actually a carry-over from live TV days.

Back in the stone ages, TV programs were shown live and recorded at the same time. Then when they ran the show again, they would let you know that it was previously recorded (or pre-recorded) - so that you didn't mistake it for a live broadcast.

Often, they would also tell you that the show was filmed before a studio audience. This was so that you didn't think there were voices in your head laughing at the show.

We haven't listed one of my pet peeves: cache vs cachet. Apparently pseudo-sophisticated folks think that "cache" is pronounced the same as "cachet." Spell checker won't catch that one (or all of the other ones previously cited (not "sited" or "sighted")) here.

I think your "had" key is stuck (although I did look up the answer).

That does prrrecious little to assuage my carefully cultivated, angry irascibility(but thank you for trying ). Wouldn't "This is a recording" work as well?

Often, they would also tell you that the show was filmed before a studio audience.

I can live with that - but when they say "filmed before a 'live' audience" I just get irascibler and irascibler (I know, it's sad ). And they are sooo fkng flippant and unthinking that they even made that announcement at the beginning of a recording of a Greatful Dead concert - IT WAS A DEAD AUDIENCE!

And, Larry King makes me irascible also. "Larry King Live", HA! I can't count the number of prerecorded episodes of "Larry King Live" that I suffered through!

I think that when Larry King dies, his tombstone should bear the inscription "Larry King Dead".

This was so that you didn't think there were voices in your head laughing at the show.

Uh...ohhhh...geez, that's a relief for my concerns. Thanks Cash!

Years ago I'd listen to the news on my way to work and heard the local news yokels regularly say things like (a few of my favorites):

"fiery inferno"

"standing on the edge of the brink"

"alcoholic addicted to alcohol"

and, believe it or not, "fatally killed"

It was imminent that someone eminent here would have the immanent wisdom to cite site and sight (but not to cite cite was an oversight ).

Was that seaman a master baiter or a masturbater?

I want to polish the pedals on my wheels.
I want to polish the petals on my wheels.

That would be an incident, eh? And if another buck stops here and I shoot it, that would make two incidents; NOT TWO INCIDENCES!

Just heard a newscaster say "decided to 'take part'" (of some intoxicating substance). I guess he reversed the term "part take"

I almost screamed, There is no term "part take" you irritating sunnovabilfitch! It's PARTAKE!

Speaking of bucks, I recently commented to a restaurateur, re the outrageous price of his venison; "Whoa, big bucks!" I said. "No, the big bucks are tough. We serve only the younger, more tender bucks" he said rather haughtily.

I get irascible at ANY degree of haughtiness , but contained my rage and said (a tad snidely I'll admit), "I mean, that's dear".

He looked down his nose at me and said with a smirk "Yes it is. Are you of the ilk that prefers elk?"

So I said "I'm outta here, you irritating sunnovabilfitch!" and left.

For all intensive purposes, spellcheck can make you're writing perfect.

So far, one of the best things, for me, about this thread is to see that many others see the same spelling, grammar, and usage mistakes that I see.

I should of expected this.

Best,
Tom

Roll/role

I once had a colleague that referred to unsettling information as "disconcerning".
