I remember like it was yesterday
. We were fishing several miles offshore of Jax, FL. and heard over the radio that he was gone...talk about a bunch of bummed out guys on a boat. I'd been a fan since the day I first heard him back in '83 or so, before he "made it big"...RIP Stevie.

I now realize why I don't remember when he died. 20 years ago was also the student murders by Danny Rolling here in Gainesville... not much else on the news...

Same here. I last saw him perform at the 1984 Delta Blues Festival in Freedom Village, Miss. Basically, just 25,000 people in a cotton field with a stage. Got to chat with him & Double Trouble for a while backstage. Now of course, I wish I'd let them autograph the concert poster I was carrying around when they offered.

I remember the Gainesville tragedy very well also. We'd gone down to Orange Lake for some bass fishing only to find the marina "dry docked" due to drought. Hanging out in the marina bar when the news broke on TV. No fishing for us, EVERYONE paranoid of strangers, so we headed back to Jax for "plan B".
Rick, I wish I'd have had the opportunity to see him "sober". I'd passed a couple of years before when he was at "rock bottom" and opened up for someone in Jax...a TOTAL disappointment for those who did. That's part of the tragedy...SRV had cleaned himself up, and his best work was ahead of him at the time of the crash imo. I must confess I've had better weeks than that particular one 20 years ago .
