Phishing attack by Phone??

just received a telephone call from "Rob" at Wells Fargo Mortgage (maybe it was Wells Phargo?). He said he wanted to process my mortgage application, but sounded stoned.

He said he first needed to verify my SS#, and offered to give my first 5 digits and I would then give him my lat 4 digits.

I declined and told him to Email me. He asked for my Email address. I said Wells Fargo HAD my Email address and hung up.

Here's the thing: I did ask for info on a refi from Wells Fargo recently, and they do hold my current mortgage.

The first 3 letters of a SS# are easy to come by, but I'm not so sure re the next 2 digits.

SO, I don't know if it was a phishing attack or not, but better safe than sorry.

I never volunteer info over the phone unless I have initiated the call to a known good number.

The few times that I've received these calls I've told them that I have no way of verifying who they really are an if I'm interested I'll call back on the number listed on my card, statement whatever.

your bank does not need to ask you for your info, they already have it.
They will ask you for the last 4 digits, just to verify that they are talking to the right person.

Yeah, sounds like a scam to me. I've gotten several text messages lately from "Chase" wanting me to call a number to verify some info. I don't have any accounts with Chase.

Whether they get the first 5 digits or not, I'd not trust them.
