"Despicable Me..."
Saw it Saturday. Great movie, fantastic characters. At some points I actually forgot this was an animated movie. The main character is as good a bad guy as anything that's come out of the Sean Connery Bond era. Yet at the same time, "Despicable Me" is one of those rarities, like old Looney Tunes, which simultaneously play to both adults and kids.
Someone told me the movie plays on the same emotional level as "Up," though I wouldn't know as I haven't yet seen Up. Anyway, just passing on a tip about a really good flick. ![]()

Despicable Me...
I wonder if it's a turn of one of Daffy Duck's famous lines, "You're dethpicable"... That would be really cool. ![]() |

It was very well done.
Family and I enjoyed it very much. While it has its tear jerker parts it is not even close to the first 10 minutes of UP. If you have not seen UP yet you should.

And "Up" has a much deeper emotional aspect. Very touching story.

I'm not sure I've even heard of it, but maybe I've forgotten.

Mrs Beard liked both movies. Funny, we saw Up with my neice last year, and then took her to Dispicable me. She is 13 now, and was able to get most of the "adult" jokes. I don't think she understood the Vector reference...

The wife an I saw it a few weeks ago - not sure I would take the kids to it but most likely. It was very good - much better than I expected.

Interesting. There are many feature and prime time cartoons that cause parents to pause, and with good reason. "Roger Rabbit" comes to mind, and of course "The Iron Giant."
The last Toy Story movie, especially toward the end, would definitely not be something I'd let little kids see. I know a husband-wife producer team who have done very well in animation, who refuse to let their kids watch cartoons.

If done properly adults will have a different experience than children. One of our favorite shows is Avatar: The Last Airbender. The animated show was out way before Camerons movie of the same name and is far better than that mess that M Knight released this year. We do't know who likes it better, us or the kids.

Cartoons these days are more about licensing product (character themed toys, games, clothes, furniture, condoms, whatever) than entertainment. Business is good apparently.
We have really enjoyed the Pixar movies including Toy Story. The toys have not been terribly popular with my kids but they love the characters. Both the 20 month old and the 5 year old saw the 3rd movie and it was intense towards the end. The 20 month old probably just didn't get it (he was sort of dozing by then) and the 5 year old got it but was handling it okay. I was surprised - the 5 year old is kind of a chicken $#%! with scary situations. He'll run out of the room from the TV he it is something he even thinks is remotely scary. One of our DVDs has a 'chub chubs' short on it and the title screen came up at one point and he ran out of the room screaming. The wife and I didn't know what to make of it at the time (he was probably 2 or 3).

Toy story 3 and UP were just weird to me... entertaining but weird... when i go to an animated movie as an adult I expect to laugh not be enlightened.
Don't read the following if you haven't seen the movie yet... Really liked despicable me... especially the story line of the old school evil genus being over come by the younger more hip evil genus but then triumphing over the young guy in the end. That and the three orphans melting the old school evil genus heart got me misty. I laughed, I cried, my life was changed

Mrs Choca balled her eyes out in Up. Admittedly, I welled up a time or two also. Despicable was not nearly the movie Up was. But, there was one part, when he walks into the Evil Bank (to fund his plan to steal the moon), and in small letters beneath the "Evil Bank" sign, it said..."formerly Lehman Brothers". That was funny.
