Calling Rush fans again....

I have to give a HUGE shout-out to Gogar who hooked my friends and me up with 11th row for the Red Rocks show last night.

Killer move and a great show. This was my third and probably last show of this tour. But I will catch another 7-10 shows on the 2011 leg after they put out their new album. I'll have some great photos tomorrow or Sat. when my buddy emails me the ones he took with his digicam from our seats. I only had my Blackberry and iPhone with me and those photos aren't great. However, we did get to see Neil's bike getting loaded up and his riding partner's (he's also the band's security guy) bike delivered from BMW of Denver while we were milling around the gift shop.

My wife and I went to Vegas to see them last Sat. and Neil pulled up next to us on this bike at a red light, led by two LV cops on their Harleys, as we were walking back to our hotel after the show. He wasn't 10 ft. from us. Pretty surreal. He had his visor up and my wife even recognized him and yelled out, "There's Neil!" None of the throngs of concertgoers around us even looked up or noticed.

Awesome!

What stuff did they play?

I've got to see them again before they hang it up. They're an exceptional act and one of the few that's even tighter live than recorded. They've been top-notch every time I've seen them (4x, which I'm sure is nothing compared to some of the guys here). I listened to all of 2112 on a long drive to a site visit today with the top down on a beautiful summer day ironically enough. It doesn't get much better than that...

I think last night was around my 70th Rush concert since 1988. It's well known that they play the whole Moving Pictures album on this tour, but I don't want to give away too many spoilers, since some folks haven't seen them yet. No huge surprises, really. They play two songs they've never performed live before, but you'd only know them if you're pretty hardcore.

Honestly, they made a ton of mistakes last night and that's especially unfortunate, since they had a very expensive film crew there in the hopes of making a concert DVD out of it because of the awesome venue. Absolute train wreck at the end of Tom Sawyer. Alex looked to be having some arthritis problems and even the infallible Neil Peart made a few errors. I used to play in a Rush tribute band, so I know what to look for. Most folks probably would never notice. But knowing what perfectionists they are, there's no way they'll let last night's performance be released on a dvd. They normally wear earphone monitors, but last night and Monday Neil wore full size headphones and they were duct taped to his beanie. I don't know if that was some special click track because they were recording it or why he had them on.

If you're a real fan, you will be delighted by Geddy's performance. I used to go to watch Neil, but Geddy has stolen probably the last 10 shows I've been to. He's been taking voice lessons, takes a night off between shows to rest his voice and his bass sounds better than ever live. Then watch him tap out the keyboard melodies on his pedals while he's playing the bass line and singing the vocal melody and you have to bow your head in respect. He is amazing. BTW, Neil looks like he hasn't missed a meal.

Here's a shot my buddy took from our seats last night. Thanks again, Gogar!

I worked on one of their first concert films in 1980. They actually played my high school in 1974.
I'm hoping to take my now 16 year old son to his first concert (RUSH) just like his old man did back in the day.
Never would have thought when I was sixteen I'd be taking my sixteen year old to see them

I got the Rush documentary DVD last weekend (Beyond the Lighted Stage) and have watched the "extras" over and over. Great stuff. I've been a huge Rush fan since "Fly By Night" came out...

I saw them do 2112 live many years ago in PA. to say it was awesome would be an understatement. I have been to a bunch of concerts. Rush, Fleetwood mac and Alice Cooper are 3 you don't want to miss if you have the chance to see them.

I've just been starting to get into them the last few years. I hated them for years, but for some reason a few years ago it started sounding good. Definitely wouldn't call myself a huge fan yet, but I'm on the other side of the fence now.

Gawd, I would HATE to be Neil Peart's drum tech

It looks daunting, but it's not like every single piece is taken apart each night. I'm sure it's a huge job before each tour, getting the rotating platform built and everything bolted onto it for the first time. For this tour the rotating platform has all kinds of special effects built into it. I has these giant thermometer-looking glass tubes with glowing green stuff in them and all kinds of such stuff that looks cool under the proper lighting. There's an article somewhere about how Neil and Drum Workshop put together the current kit and Sabian found a way to paint the gear images on top of his cymbals without deadening the sound. The kit is hugely complex and expensive, but I don't think Neil pays for much of it beyond the platform and fans. He's probably the most sought-after celebrity endorser in the music world today, since he tours so much and has such a following. Pretty sure the FedEx guy meets him at a lot of the venues to drop off new gear from the manufacturers.
