Soft market on Jags...jeez
Can't sell my XJR for the life of me. 175K miles, but properly maintained. I just rebuilt the front end (control arm bushings, upper/lower ball joints, wheels bearings, etc), tranny mount rebuilt, oil changes every 3k, etc etc etc.
No sale on ebay at $3999, no reserve! wow... milt...im coming to california. ive got a deal for you.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1282708236.jpg |
Seems like a really clean car for $4,000. Is that the supercharged V8? I really love the look of that vehicle. What year?
|
Supercharged inline 6....the final iteration of their 6 cyl. Something like 320hp, 370lbs of torque. it's a '97. Never had a single problem with this thing.
Oh well...either milt's going to get a great deal, or i'll pickle barrel it in the barn :) |
The issue is that these do not have the best rep on reliability and that 175k is really getting there. I always buy around 100k miles - I have rarely taken a vehicle over 200k without major component failure. 4k may be cheap to buy but if you do not DIY and have to go to a shop every couple months that can double the purchase price within a year ...
Does a 97 MB or 5/7 series BMW fetch more than this with the same miles? George |
All good points, George. It's just mindblowing to me....this car was 77K brand new (a moot point), but it's really been maintained to impecabble standards. The car even has a new Jaguar battery in it. Prior to me owning it, it only had oil changes at the dealer, etc.
Lot of car for under 4K. Especially when I see the crap that's offered on craigslist, etc for 4k. |
That is a beautiful car. Regrettably Jags have never held their value.
|
I friend of mine had to sell his BMW 760 iL for two grand. He is pretty sure the guy that bought it was just going to part it out. It ran just fine, but no one wants a 12 cylinder dollar sucking beast. It sold for a LOT of money new and that money just went away.

That's the main reason I got off the new car merry go round years ago. I'll drive my daily until it falls apart and then buy another 10 year old VW. The Porsche stays until something unforeseen happens or I leave this planet. Now if I ever won the lottery a cars depreciation would be the last thing I would think about. ;) |
Has ANY English car ever held any value? Besides some rare, very old cars, I can't think of any.
|
Probably any pre '73 Jag, any triumph, mg, healey, etc are worth more now then when they were new.

My daily driver is a 1986 El Camino that I have owned for 19 years. It has 286,000 miles and looks and runs great. My 1985 911 has 136,000 miles and I have owned it for 15 years. Both cars are worth MORE than I paid for them. |
Its wild... No one really wants the huge high $$$ luxury cruisers that cost 70k+ new... But like the lower E36 3series are still commanding around 5 or even up to 10+ for the Ms.
|
Yep. reminds me of when i managed a high-end body shop. Jags, 7 series bmw's, audi A8's, and S-class mercedes: the WORST depreciation.
Look at Jags on ebay...yes, they take a huge hit, but this is just stupid. The price on this thing is cheaper than what some XJ40's go for. ...this is a superior car in every single way. it's funny though, a lot of that depreciation is based on preconceived notions about reliability. for example, this jag has actually been THE MOST reliable car i've ever owned. I'm just trying to dump it because I'm moving to california. The 912, TR4, and E30 all need a place to go, too. |
Its not so much "reliability" as i is all the complex systems these high end vehicles have-people live in fear of fixing them, even if its all in their mind.
Makes for great deals though. |
...Exactly, in their mind, or ignorance. The particular reason I went for this jag was because it doesn't have any complex systems. The suspension is standard wishbone suspension. The engine management is Bosch 4.0. No electric gadgets to break, etc.
Oh well...I'll park it in my dad's barn |
Mike- what is the VIN on your Jag?
|
At that price, would think you could do better parting it out, or just donate it and take a deduction (what I would do to save myself some angst)
|
It's a tough market to sell anything right now. I have a motorcycle for sale, and I have a couple of buddies with Porsches for sale. My dad is trying to sell an RV.
We're all getting lots of tire kickers and low-ballers but no reasonable offers. We all may have to get past this kind of "reverse sticker shock" and dump the price to get the deal done. As sign of the times, I think. |
