Shipping Furniture cross country
I'm just trying to get a good idea where to start. My grandmother wants to give me some of her furniture. Some things have been in the family for a couple of generations but most of it was my grandparents in their home of 50 years.
The stuff is in Florida (Jacksonville). I am in Southern California. I've got my uncle measuring the stuff but what are some decent moving companies? Anyone done this sort of thing recently and can recommend a company? Pitfalls? Insurance? Thanks

I don't recommend Allied. Quote they gave me was about 1/3 of what they billed me. If you can find a freight carrier, I think it would be cheaper. I've had good luck with Forward Air in the past, but that assumes you can drop off and pick-up at one of their locations.

Google "pods"
I know nothing about them other than they are cheaper then a regular moving co. http://www.pods.com/About-Pods.aspx

The best way is too move the furniture to a van line storage terminal. They will add it to a light load coming near you. The OTR driver wins because he gets a heavier load and more money. You win because you didn't need the furniture at any specific time and could wait on the opportunity.
I did this with a baby grand piano, CA to AL. Just insure the stuff for way over its actual value and they'll take care of it. |
