It shouldn't be this hard. DVD->HD->Watch on laptop.

I want to rip some DVD's to my laptop's hard drive and then be able to watch them. I've tried Handbrake and it gave me something I could play, but the quality was crap. Tried DVDFab, and couldn't get anything that would play once it was on my drive.

Any ideas here?

I use Pocket-DVD Studio. It is really designed to rip them for use on a Smart Phone. You can specify the quality level you would like.

Don't expect it to be extremely high quality. Remember, DVDs are only 640x480 format to start. Screen resolution on my laptop is 1920 x 1200. My Phone is 800x480

Handbrake works.

There is MPEG streamclip from Squared 5. Free.

Basic interface but does what it's meant to do.

Play with your output settings to achieve better quality and manage file size.

Keep in mind that DVD content is already compressed.

If intended viewing is a computer then make sure to select de-interlaced/non-interlaced

I thought handbrake would do the trick. I guess I'll keep playing with the settings.

DVD Decrypter

Rip the DVD to your hard disk, then use Media Player Classic - Home Cinema - Video Player - to open the .IFO file and play.

As above, its not going to be HD, DVDs aren't great resolution.

I use k9copy and go straight to a bit for bit copy in an ISO image format. VLC can play ISO images, so no issues...

Of course, k9copy is a linux app...
