Could it be gout? I know gout usually affects the big toe (podagra), but it can hit other joints. I've had gout in my shoulder and it was very very painful...

Gout would not strike for just a few minutes.

Its definately a broken blood vessel....It hasn't happened a 3rd time but I've been being carefull when using force with that hand.....
When it did happen it was pretty instant as far as how the swelling/numbmess went up....its still kinda tender after the 2nd time it happened like its bruised....which would make sense....
I'm sure it'll happen again cause I'm a busy fool at the shop, when it does I'll have E2 (co-worker) snap a pick next to the other one for comparison.....
I don't have gout.....
suprisingly I'm in pretty good shape except for the beck's/corona diet I've been trying out LOL

LOL! That looks like an injury from slugging something solid. Like a wall.

For OP, if your finger and hand did not turn black and blue, your co-worker needs to go back to medical school and study harder.

Danny, you need to learn how to punch, hit with knuckles for index and middle finger to avoid the boxer's fracture.
