Tag Heuer Monaco Quartz?
So we all know the Steve McQueen classic Monaco watch, automatic movement, expensive new, expensive'r vintage.
But i got skinny wrists and skinny wallet And have been eyeballing this for some time.. slightly smaller, 37 mm quartz movement, with battery.. ![]() I also had an eye on the Porsche design watches, but frankly they don't hold up next to the Tag... I like the slightly lower key design, can get one new for 1200 euro. It's for dressed occasions (rare), and don't wear daily watch, hell, haven't worn a watch since i got me a cellphone, 20 years ago.. I guess I'm getting to the age where look at pretty things , now that a mirror isn't working as well as it used to :P Does anybody have one yet? happy with it? Obviously this will never be the big collectible watch but it's not chopped liver either , any thoughts?

If you think it will give you some happiness and you can afford it, why not? The only caution would be that the watch fashionistas who post here consider quartz watches pretty low in status. They seem to prefer a less expensive automatic over a more expensive quartz.
Personally, I prefer quartz for the accuracy. But I'm no fashionista. Here's what I've worn for over a decade now. USA name but really a Swiss quartz Hamilton Khaki. Easy for my aging eyes to read, tells me time, day of week, and date. The Hamilton name was bought by Swatch. Think it cost me around $200...battery every few years, easily replaced by a local jeweler. Leather band replaced by a more durable metal one. For the rare "dressy thing", I can drag out a 1950's gold Lord Elgin. ![]()

I bought my dad a Tag quartz dive watch about 20 years ago. It has endured 2 decades of open ocean fishing. Looks chewed up, but functions perfectly.

SV, Tag Heuer quartz watches are pretty good quality, looks a good watch for the money, don't worry what others think, buy it for yourself
I have a Tag quartz dive watch which is waterproof to 1km, I bought it decades ago, got 40% off when I worked at McLaren and bought it with money saved up from all my mileage expense claims driving between sites. Haven't worn it since the 90's but your thread may have spurned me on to get it service and up and running again

At 37mm, that's a very handsome watch and if it moves you, I say get it. If you don't like it after a year or so I would think it's a quick sale with little to no money lost.
I think about things like this watch a lot but have trended toward minimalism coupled with experientialism. The only things I spend real money on is cars so that I can spend real money on experiences. That watch here in the U.S. pays for another trip to Paris and Le Mans this summer. But I completely understand the allure.

Tag Heuer Quartz watches are excellent. I've owned my Kirium for more than 20 years.
It's a very 90s design but I still wear it regularly. (They have a Swiss made ETA movement) ![]()

If you get the quartz you miss the crystal back that reveals the Swiss movement. That alone is worth the price of admission.

And at 1200 euro, he is well within reach of the auto anyway (unless only considering brand new from an AD).

Stijn, get the automatic. Not all Tags will have the display back, but it is cool to look at. Also, if you decide to sell, the auto will hold its value better and is more desirable. One of the reasons watch people do not like quartz movements is because they are so cheap to make, it is ridiculous. Tag uses a Ronda quartz movement, so you can Google the cost.

it looks like unworn automatic 37mm's go for 200 more then the new quartz, but no box
with box the value somehow goes up another 800.. Not sure that makes sense. But I think I can manage without the box..at least not for 800 euro need to keep pulse checking the various sources for prices.. Might get some good deal in januari, lots of people looking to flip stuff to get cashflow back into black

Nice watch either way, but I’d opt for the auto.
It just appeals more to me, dunno why. Tag is a quality brand, can’t go wring with either one. Every man should have at least one quality timepiece, imo.

what is the relevance of a 2nd hand tag that does come with box, but has no papers.
other then collectors seeking a complete package . those papers are of no use for a second hand watch that's well out of warranty is it?

Beware of fake watches too Stijn, some of them are really really good. Automatic movement, see through back, quality feel, hefty weight.
Very difficult at first glance to spot real from fake. It would be a shame if you got burned for that amount of money. Buying second hand always brings a certain risk.

It gives provenance. However, if you aren't planning on selling it, it probably makes no difference to you. Papers also give you a sense of security that the watch is probably real. Unfortunately, there are also fake papers out there.

yeah fakes is something that worries me indeed.
Hence looking a chrono24.com for verified sources, and the guarantees provided there. Might end up spending a bit more for a new one, just to be sure I probably won't ever buy another one , defo not going to start collecting these.. So might as well get one the right way for instance cheapest one in the list https://www.chrono24.com/search/index.htm?accessoryTypes=&dosearch=true&query=ww2110&searchexplain=1&sortorder=1&watchTypes= Both from spain 1st one no papers used 2nd one, unwork.. but papers I just don't like the way that one looks.. the edge of the glass looks wrong to me. Seems to have very pronounced gap between glass & frame, or is that edge of the frame, hard to tell.. but it looks odd on this specimin, haven't seen any others with that makes me think either fake or had work done to it.. ![]() ![]() ![]() 1st one is cheaper, but has signs of usage.. but it just looks better to me.. despite that it has some signs of wear maybe I'm just imagining things, but it just makes me look away from the cheapest ones out there.. there has to be a reason they are that much cheaper ...
