Duke Nukem Forever

Rumored to be shipping in 2011.

I'll believe it when I see it.

(The game has been in development since 1997. It was finally canceled in 2009, only to be secretly revived by some of the developers.)

What does the original play on? I don't have any Voodoo cards or P1/MMX computers lying around anymore. Maybe have a Win95 CD though.

Video games is not a simple business. Sometimes it's just downright stupid.

You guys would not believe the shenanigans that went on with that IP.

Contrary to recent announcements there are still some unresolved issues on the table which may negatively impact our revenue stream but I think it will all work out.

If they stick the Creative Director that I think they will on it it'll kick ass.

He worked for me at another company and is really one of the most talented guys I've seen.

Should be worth the wait.

What game is so good that ppl would wait 13 years for it?

I mean there is a metric ton of games out there of every Genre, why is this one turning into a legend?

The original Duke Nukem 3D was pretty revolutionary for the time, with a nearly 3d environment, you could look up and down and aim wherever you looked. You could jump and crouch, swim, and even fly around with a jet pack.

Its immediate predecessor Doom, you could only shoot up and down if there was an enemy in sight, and there was no jumping.

Duke 3D had good level design and game play, plus weapons that were new and unique, like the shrink ray and the freeze gun, plus remote detonation pipe bombs and laser activated trip mines. Even with the crappy-by-modern-standards 1996 graphics, it still holds up today, much more so with the various high definition texture packs, and mods to update the technology that very talented people with a lot of free time have come up with over the years.

EDuke32 • Duke3D for Windows, Linux and OS X

I still have Duke Nukem 3d on CD.

I have no idea how to get it to work with Windows XP (or Windows 7). I seem to recall I could get it running fine, but the sound didn't work. It has to do with how pre-DirectX games were written with embedded drivers.

Pretty simple, actually.

Install the game as normal. Then download and install the High resolution pack,

From here: Duke Nukem 3D: High Resolution Pack

That pack includes the Eduke32 port I linked above, plus some other stuff.

When you run it, it checks for an update, or you can just download the latest version if Eduke32 from the link above.

On edit, to be clear, you need to have a copy of the game to use the Windows port and the high resolution port.

That's funny.

I remember adding ram (to 8 or 16 mb?) so the game would play w/o clipping so many frames. I havent played a computer game in years but I might pick this up. I'll put on some old Pearl Jam and relive college.

My favorite was right before he fought the giant monster: "I'm going to rip off your head and $h!t down your neck!"

Then, after you beat the monster, he casually walks up, rips the heads off, drops his pants, sits on the monster's neck, and unfolds a newspaper...

This was the original multiplayer 3d that added cleverness to just point and shoot. Putting the trip mines right behind false walls where the health was, or setting them to be triggered by opening a door. Dropping a couple pipe bombs and then making noise around the corner to draw someone out, etc...

Only bested by the original Half-Life multiplayer for the same sort of "thinking man's deathmatch"

I was that guy in HL that would use every weapon pretty much equally, shooting through walls with the gauss gun, dropping bugs on people from air ducts, running around with the rpg with the laser turned off to not give away position or to fire it up and over then turn it back on, etc etc.

Time to dig through the old CDs and call up some people since I'm doubtful there are any good servers running anymore.

To be safe you had to drop a couple pipe bombs on the ground where you set the trip mine, so they would all go off at once. Never know if they guy you were fighting had armor or atomic health.

I played it for a couple hours last night, with the 3D Polymer High def pack and it held up really well.
