10th Anniversary riding MS150/Bike MS

It is my 10th year riding in Eastern NC's Bike MS. This is a weekend ride to raise money for National MS Society. There are rides all across the country.

I remember my first year, when I was just happy to get through 75 miles each day. Back then, there were only two routes: 75 and 100 miles. I rode my first Century in year 3 and in year 7 I rode back to back Centuries.

We've had heat, wind, tropical storms, but it has always been my privilege to ride and raise money for a worthy cause. I know there are quite a few other cyclists on Pelican. If any of you have done Bike MS, share an interesting story from one of your rides.

If anyone would like to sponsor me, I will be riding 150 miles this weekend, but donations will be accepted for the rest of the month and a few weeks into October. The Century thing is a bit out of reach after dislocating my shoulder last year in a non-cycling incident. The link to donate is below.

I did one for MS quite a few years ago in the Toronto area. Great turnout. At the time my employer was a major sponsor. It was a good ride, well supported, only problem was a cold front moved through that night and it was rainy and cold for the return ride, it had been hot and humid the previous day. Dramatic change in conditions but I finished. It was also a 150 miler.

We ride the Houston to Austin MS150 each year, with 16,500 riders. A buddy and I are going to do the Boston to Capecod ride as well, next year.

Is this the ride you are going to do, I'm planning on this in June.

I'm doing the Eastern NC Chapter ride in New Bern, NC. I was on the planning committee a few years back and I think our ride was the first in the country to base the ride in a fixed location and ride loops each day.

New Bern has an excellent Convention Hall that houses the non-riding activities. I think the idea has caught on in other cities. We had over 2600 riders last year. The event raised over $1.8 million.

Here's the recap:

Saturday: Awesome day. While I wasn't planning on riding a century, the weather looked bad for Sunday, so I did the 100. I had a great group to ride with. It was one of the easiest Century rides I've done.

Sunday: We had only a little rain mid way through a 75 mile route, despite a forecast of thunderstorms. We spent most of the day at 20 mph+. The 100 mile route was closed due to the weather forecast.

It was a lot of fun for a great cause. The riding is over, but the hard work of collecting donations is still on. Please consider sponsoring my ride at the link in the first post of this thread. I ride for a family member who has MS. Any and all support is greatly appreciated.

To everyone who's riding the MS150s THANK YOU!

Joanna, my wife has MS. She was diagnosed with it in April of 1998.

MS has taken her ability to dance, walk with out a cane AND assistance, & her Independence.

Please, If any of you can help with donations or riding please do!

Jim,

Thanks for the post. Since my sister-in-law was diagnosed around 1994, we have met so many people that face the debilitating effects and the uncertainty of MS. Thank you for the reminder of why my wife and I ride and both my kids volunteer. Our small team of about 25 riders has been top ten in fund raising since its beginning in 2000.

My family has taken up the cause. We will not stop until this disease is beaten, and it will be!

Best wishes to Joanna and you.

I wanted to post a good pic from the even, but I had to wait for someone else to provide it. Here's my wife and me before the Saturday Century ride. Surprisingly, we didn't look that much different after. It was that good a day.
