MMMM...Bacon Sandwich
My love affair with Bacon started at an early age... I made it a personal goal to try every food that contained this most precious commodity... My mother noticed my passion for this food and insured that we always had some on hand for what have you... BLT's, beans & Bacon, green beans and Bacon, Bacon burgers... you name it, when I left home for the military, I felt as if my Bacon passion had run full circle and that I had tasted every possible way for this delectable treat to be served... After my third year in the military, I was still confident that my Bacon knowledge was complete... Then it happened... my world was turned upside down.... after coming back to the main land from a recent deployment, a couple of friends and myself went to a bowling alley to well.. bowl.... I didn't have much cash on me and I noticed that they had a Bacon sandwich on the menu for $1.50, I asked the lady behind the counter if this Bacon sandwich the menu was offering just a BLT.... The lady said no that it was not a BLT... I asked her if it was like a club sandwich with Bacon on it... she said "No honey, this sandwich is totally different, but I guarantee that you are gonna like it.." I was skeptical at first, I was thinking to myself "what could this thing possibly be? Am I about to try something that I have yet to discover" The lady put the Bacon slices on the gril and as it sizzled, I caught a whiff of that savory smell of hickory smoked Bacon.... After the Bacon was done I saw her take out some bread and begin putting the sandwich together.... She handed me my tray and immediately I noticed that this concoction looked vaguely familiar, but at the same time different... I went and sat down and took a bite.... at that moment my life would never be the same... I was so taken back by the flavor, the savoriness of what I was tasting that I pondered what my reality actually was... did my mother truly love me? why in my 21yrs had she never made me such a sandwich, why had no other human on the planet ever mentioned this sandwich to me? Why didn't Sonic sell this sandwich? Why did none of my best friends moms ever make this sandwich for me? I could not answer such questions, but at that moment I discovered what true love actually was and what I was destined to be eating on occasions for the rest of my life... Even now I sometimes forget about this sandwich, but I had a couple last night and thought I would pass this along....
Fry up some hickory smoked Bacon (maple kind don't taste right) Make yourself a grilled cheese sandwich with American cheese (actually make two, if not you will be kicking yourself in the butt for not doing so... DON'T burn the bread!) as soon as you take the sandwiches off of the skillet open them up and put in your Bacon, a little Miracle Whip and some dill pickle slices... close them up and enjoy!!!!!SmileWavy |
My wife is that way with chocolate.
I hear people go on and on about bacon and I guess I just don't understand. It is OK. But I just don't "get it." It seems very salty and it just does not trip my trigger. I can take it or leave it, just like chocolate. |
Sounds excellent. I will have to try to make one (or two) soon. :)
I did make bacon wrapped jalapeno popper's this weekend. They were delicious, if I do say so myself. |
There's something to this sandwich... the Miracle Whip, Cheese, Bacon and pickle blend in such a manner that it is outstanding..... Almost hard to describe... if there was anything similar to an orgasmic food experience this would be it...

Ah bacon, nature's most perfect food.
Their August menu this place The Winds Cafe and Bakery » dinner had a dish that featured breaded, deep fried bacon. It was exquisite. How often do you get the chance to tell a chef his bacon is exquisite? My bacon sandwich recipe is simply fried bacon and horseradish on lightly toasted coarse grain bread. There is a Amish farm near here where they smoke their own bacon. It is amazing - a whole different food from supermarket bacon. Did you see the Discovery channel program on factory processing of bacon? I stick with the locally made stuff now. |
If you like that, try a Cuban sandwich, if you can find a decent one in your area...
Then start exploring the different things the Italians and Spanish do with pork... JR |

Some places are more fastidious and throw a newspaper over the meat to keep the flies off. As a matter of fact, the first time I saw this dish I walked into a cafe and saw this newspaper hovering over the bar with a pig's foot sticking out from under it. Major WTF??? moment. I never tried it - something about the flies. |

My favorite is just a bacon - tomato sandwich with lots of miracle whip on fresh untoasted bread. If you can get good vine ripe tomatos, so much the better. Think I will try your bacon/cheese/miracle whip sandwich but use tomatoes instead of pickles.. How long is it til lunch ??? |

Do yourself a favor and do one with tomatoes, the other with dill pickle slices... I promise you that it will not just have a pickle flavor vs. a tomato flavor... the tartness of the pickles, the hickory smoke and sweetness blend together and then you get the richness of the cheese and Texas toast flavor as a follow up.... Man it's good!!!! Wish I didn't kill the last pack of Bacon last night... maybe I can talk mama into going to the store....:D |

I was thinking of the hams from Spain and Italy that are world famous. Then there's the 42 other things they do with pork, including their various versions of bacon. Anthony Bourdain aired a show on Madrid last Monday, that might still be in re-runs. Much jamon was consumed. JR |

I grow tomatoes for the BLT's all summer, that, and my grandson is mental for the little orange cherry tomatoes. |

My only requirement for Bacon is that it's crispy. I don't dig the floppy half cooked bacon.
I know, that makes me a Novice and bacon lover wannabe. It is what it is. |
Potato spears cooked in the oven with 1 lb of bacon scattered on top is pretty d@mn good.
|
Bacon sliced wrapped around shrimp and japaleno marinated in italian dressing then cooked on the grilled is also d@mn tasty.
