Passing of Shawn357

Shawn Muscat was killed in a light airplane accident Thursday, August 26, 2010 in Arizona.

I met Shawn a POC event at Willow Springs a couple years ago. I didn't know him well, but he offered to help with my engine drop on my track car shortly after I met him, with advice on tools, time and supplies. Always offered advice on anything mechanical.

Really a nice guy that lived in the same town (Poway, CA). Although I'm involved in aviation, I just heard about this crash this morning in an email from the POC.

Shawn frequented Pelican and had the same demeanor online as he did in person. Godspeed to Shawn and his family he has left behind.

Sorry if something has already been posted, I did a search to no avail.

I remember seeing Shawn357 around here over the years. That's very sad news.

legion 09-16-2010 05:23 PM

Wow. Really sad. We figured out that we both work for the same company awhile ago. He was on my list of people to visit if I made it out to CA.

Wow, very sad.

It would seem one of his last threads was eerily relevant/prophetic.

RIP bud. :(

sscates 09-16-2010 05:43 PM

Oh my, that is the thread that he started regarding the flight that took his life. He was a passenger. I wish he would've contacted me about his fear of flying. An experimental aircraft doesn't really have the greatest safety record behind it to instill confidence in flying.

That sucks. He was way too young. RIP Shawn Muscat.

Here's a link to the story with a great pic of Shawn. Apparently the same pilot/plane crash landed in 2006. :(

sc_rufctr 09-16-2010 06:50 PM

I hope I don't offend by posting this.

But I though it would help make a great tribute to a fellow Pelican.

Godspeed Shawn.

Wow, that is pretty heavy, life is short and precious, too short all too often.

I remember that fear of flying thread, not such an irrational phobia it appears.

Listen to your little voice guys, if it speaks to you.

Tim Hancock 09-17-2010 03:41 AM

Wow... I feel bad now for what I was thinking when I read about his fear of flying. This is just awful.

fingpilot 09-17-2010 03:55 AM

Even worse Tim, Shawn came up to me at an event, and asked me how I dealt with flying for a living. I think I said something along the lines of feeling more scared on the LA freeways than out over the Pacific.

I'll admit, I am spoiled being in a modern turbine cockpit. I might have been less so in a Thorp.

RIP Shawn.

azasadny 09-17-2010 03:56 AM

Very sad. My thoughts and prayers go out to Shawn's family and friends.

A930Rocket 09-17-2010 03:58 AM

Yep, I still feel safer flying my little putt putt airplanes on sunny days over northern Ohio than I do driving my car to work each day, but this whole deal is just awful. :(

I wonder what happened.... airplanes don't typically just lawn dart in. I wonder if the guy got too slow in the pattern and cross over spun in or whether there was an ultra rare (even for "experimentals") catastrophic structural failure.

nostatic 09-17-2010 06:32 AM

life is often ironic, sometimes brutally so.

godspeed

Groesbeck Hurricane 09-17-2010 07:08 AM
