My son walked by when I played the link, said: "Castles...nice".

I had no clue, never got Jimi.

My introduction to Jimi Hendrix: It was 1975 and I was 6yrs old... My dad owned some apartments next door to our house and one of the tenants was a black guy named "Herb"... I would always go and chat with Herb cuz he was pretty cool... one day I went over and he was barbecuing some chicken on the front porch listening to some jams... He asked me if I wanted to hang out and have some chicken and I told him sure... during the course of the afternoon I asked him what type of cigarettes he was smoking cuz they sure smelled funny compared to other cigarettes... he advised that they were his doctor cigarettes... I shrugged it off and we began talking about the music we were listening to... He told me that we were listening to Jimi Hendrix and that he was the greatest guitarist that ever lived.... I told him that there was no way he could be the greatest guitarist that ever lived because Ace Frehely was the greatest guitarist that ever lived... He took me inside his apartment and showed me a couple of life size Hendrix posters... I remember looking at them and thinking that the guy really has something going on.... it was a good day with Herb... we had a great chicken dinner and I learned about Jimi... Been years since I have seen Herb... would be cool to see him again.... I miss the 70's

I was on my way to court that day . . .

I did get Hendrix. Remember how you could pull the record holder lever thingie over on a multi-play LP player & it would keep repeating the side? Side 3 of Electric Ladyland for most of a night . . . I guess you had to be there.

Back then I sorta got Jimi. More so now. Back then it was Zeppelin, The Who, Airplane, Cream, and shortly after that, Uncle Jerry.

I like Hendrix. He could play and sing out of rhythm with what he was playing. Very cool stuff.

Hendrix and Syd Barrett had a burning hatred for each other. Hendrix toured England with Pink Floyd before either of them were big. Hendrix overdosed. Barrett went insane. A lot of "The Wall" is based on Barrett's antics when touring with Hendrix.

The song "Nobody Home" by Pink Floyd is about an incident in which Barrett crushed up a bunch of Quaaludes and sprinkled them into his hair before taking the stage...right after Hendrix. Barrett was high on about six different things and just stood there while the band played behind him...

I wish I was cool enough to go along with the crowd on this one but I guess I'll have to be uncool and just say it like it is.
I like some of hendrix's records, the studio stuff where he was coached into playing actual music.

But I just watched part of a biography on him. They showed him playing a few songs live, what a total hack. Maybe it was too much acid but he couldn't play crap live based on those performances. He played too fast and too loud but it was nowhere near good.
It was like he was totally deaf and couldn't hear the drummer or anyone else. I wondered a couple of times if they were all playing the same song or not. It was NOISE.

It reminded me of a kid picking up an electric guitar for the very first time and just plucking and making as much noise as possible with no meaning, no music to it at all.

Flame on.

I caught a little retrospective on him on (of all things) NPR. Went into the 'Linda' angle, and Jimi's tribute to her. How he (self taught) played the right handed guitar left handed, strung backwards, and sometimes behind his back, or over his head. The story of how "Hey Joe" came to be. Was really good.

Was HS and college time for me when his stuff was around.

lol, i kinda agree, but the same goes for the Beatles and mostly everything else from that era not just Jimi... The distortion and effects they used in production of the 67-69 records for me result in , hmmm, that feels familiar.

Even without that, Jimi H and band touch on so many levels, rythm (that drummer was the shizzle) , guitar (not just the wild use feedback), the lyrics....

Few if any Blues artists can rock like Jimi, few if any Rock artists can play blues like him... He was up there with the best of both worlds...

Here's the link - it's pretty interesting:
