Firearm for my Mom
I want to buy a revolver for my 79 year old Mom for home protection.
She's a young 79, and her 380 Walther is difficult to load ect. Suggestions?

Take her to a local range that will let you rent different guns and let her try them out. You would be surprised at what she may feel most comfortable with. My wife likes her Ruger LCP, but it has quite a kick. She shot my Star PD in .45ACP and she really liked that one (so do I) and she was surprised at the low recoil of that pistol. Ruger makes an LCR (light, compact revolver) that a friend's wife bought and she loves it. Easy to conceal and easy to shoot...

My suggestion would be a hammerless "Ladysmith".

LCR is a nice piece, but has some kick to it due to lack of mass. For keeping at home for my mom (about the same age), I would recommend a small, heavy .357 that has some mass (e.g. Ruger GP100 model 1715 or 1705...or other similar) and load it with .38 (definitely NOT .357). Looks intimidating, easy to load and handle, minimal recoil.
Just my $.02.

My Mom is 80... if she told me that she wanted a pistol, I would probably get her a little stainless Ruger or Taurus revolver in .22lr and fill it with CCI stingers for her... Don't figure she would need much more than that... Reason being, it isn't going to do her much good is she can't hit her target due to recoil issues... and I think you can get 7-8 shot revolvers which gives them a couple extra rounds of ammo...

If money is no object, get a full stainless steel Smith & Wesson 357, 6 shot, 2" barrel. Load it with standard .38 SPL. If money is an issue, get a Taurus.
Take her to the range to get used to it.

There's an 82 year old Marine at my range that bought his wife an LCR and she loves it. I shot it a few times and was surprised at how well it shoots.

If it is in the home where the gun doesn't need to be portable, I would get her 20 gauge 870 pump with an 18.5" barrel and load it with a couple rounds of bird shot and then buckshot for the rest. They sell "tactical" models that hold 7 rounds. Usually it only takes chambering a round for the bad guy to take off.

as said, 38 revolver
If you really want an auto, beretta makes several where the barrel will pop up to load first round manually. But go with the revolver. After you get it, remember that a wider smooth trigger face gives the feel of a lighter trigger pull, so consider replacing with a wide target trigger.....

Well I vote .38 revolver with a 6 inch barrel. But its up to your mom if thats to much recoil.
In a confined space, a .22 makes a nice big pop. Lots of folks have went to their graves from a .22 wound. Not much knock down power, but....

Pump action shotgun - nothing like the sphinctor clamping moment of horror for the bad guy when ya rack one in!
Add red hair and estrogen to the mix and the bad guy would probably just die of fright. ![]() angela

Sawed off street howitzer. Easy to maneuver, can't miss. All the protection she needs.
