Paris would be good on a bicycle, now it looks like I won't have to check the bike...

Lived in SF for 4 years, primarily via bicycle. Very good way to get around The City.

How many square miles is Paris?

Bill Douglas 09-22-2010 08:31 PM

I'd just hang around the left bank eating, and eating and eating.

It's pretty big. There are plenty of parts you won't want to bother with. But it's very big.

One thing I did see in the hotel lobby, which looks like a must-do (if I ever get drugged and dragged back to Paris) was a pamphlet on tours of the French Revolution and WWII historical sites. I want to say these were walking tours, but that can't be correct. My wife would never care for this stuff, so I'll drop her off at Lafayette Galleries next time and go on my own. Bring your wallet. Man, Paris is expensive. I saw 1 litre mugs of Stella for 30 Euros ($39). French beer SUCKED and was crazy expensive. Our "average" quality lunch for two at a Chinese place with two TingTaos was 57 Euros.

Where the heck did you eat? There were tons of cheap places in Quartier Latin (I'm talking 3 course meals for like 13 Euros). These were dinner prices.

Trust me, Paris can be done on a budget.

This one would kill Randy. He doesn't understand why you might respect a porn star.

Yes, I know. And that's how I would have done it, had I been there for myself. But I was taking the wifey around to all the places she wanted to see and thus we ate where we found ourselves at the time. After driving around there, I was almost always willing to pay whatever it cost for a beer. Really got tired of the 25cl serving sizes though. It's not like drinking Koelsch in Cologne, where your have a newly filled glass as soon as yours is empty.

Dine in style at Fouquet's on the avenue des Champs-Elysées.
Bring enough cash.

i agree with bill, hang out in the left bank. its a great area.

The thing that I love about all of the great cities is that you can eat great food for cheap if you know where to look. You can also have a $400 lunch in Paris but that's a different topic. NYC, L.A. and Chicago are the 3 best places to eat in the U.S. if you only have $5 in your pocket. Paris is the same.

Have some steak frites at this restaurant - Le Relais de l'Entrecôte.

I've been to the one on 20 rue Saint Benoit on the left bank, in the St. Germain des Pres district. Ordering is easy, you just pick your wine, otherwise its one-size-fits-all.

Get together with rpkesq?

First off, most of the hot ladies are down on the coast around Nice/Caanes and so on.

Second, REMVERJIAERD_ZDVRFDASERFEC does not exist, no one has ever met him and we are being told that he is really "that idiot in Moscow" that got tossed out.

Go to the Entrecote de Paris, have some of the best food there with a bottle of their house red then get the hell out of Paris.

Ah, my old friend Joe the Wanker.

Your knowledge of Paris is about as accurate as your knowledge of me. Which is to say nonexistent.

Plenty of hot chicks in Paris but not for ugly Americans. They are more discriminating than your usual choices.

Paris offers the most choices in truly fine food than any where in the entire world for ridiculously low prices if you eat like the Natives do.

If you are unable to see and judge the quality that is all around you in Paris, then you must eat like a tourist and pay the price for lack of knowledge.

Rick Lee 09-23-2010 10:16 AM

I will concur that the women there are super. After being around all the short-haired, manly-looking German women, France was easy on the eyes. Saw some very cool Ducatis parked in a beer garden courtyard in Strassbourg and then two hotties in riding gear come out of a bar, hop on and ride off. Very cool. But I'll say doing great food on a shoestring budget in Paris takes some serious planning ahead of time.

Hit up some jazz clubs if you're into that.

You can eat VERY WELL in France cheaply but you can not buy (nice) clothes or shoes bonne marche - don't even try.

I was just in Paris for a week with the family and had a great time. This was my third visit and we went low cost on the food an had no problem eating well on cheap while enjoying it all. Too funny that you mention Le Relais de l'Entrecôte. We had dinner at the on on Monparnasse and enjoyed it. They had the best fries I have ever had and great desserts as well. Its been 14 years so I was surprised by the number of pizza and sushi places.

We did all the touristy things (Catacombs included) and was most surprised and impressed with Les Invalides (Museum De Armee and Napoleaon's Tomb). I hadnt been on the first two visits.

If you have Comcast search for Anthony Bourdains recent Paris visit with Eric Ripert. They hit a number of new Bistros that are breaking the mold of the typical high end Paris eating experience.

I was bummed there wasn't any auto museaums in Paris, like Torino, Munich, etc but if you'd like to do a sporting type of adventure I would try to hit a local Rugby or football match. There are a number of clubs in the city (Racing Metro, Stade Francais, Paris St. Germain). If there is a match at Stade de France, it would be an experience.

I also took about a 800 pictures but thought you'd appreciate these the most.

In 8 days I only saw three vintage 911's. One SC, a 3.2 Targa and this below parked on the right bank near the Opera:

Anyone own this one here??
