Anybody had a tonsillectomy as an adult? Working on scheduling mine now. I've read some real horror stories.

Yep @40, sucks, big time.

Missed a week of work and then spent another week working from home.

I did lose weight because it hurt too bad to swallow anything.

I did as part of something called a UPPP. My situation was probably different than yours, but it hurt like nothing on this earth. The worst of it was over after 10 days, but the pain was progressively worse. It was three years before I had my first cold after that!

I did have a UPP as well, so that may have added to the pain.

I did at 34, along with a deviated septum repair and some other sinus crap. The used a laser for the tonsils, was really not bad at all.

Funny side story: I figured since I was going to be asleep, so I thought what a great time to have a vasectomy - didn't want to be awake for that. So I kept calling urologists with the opening question: "do you have time on your surgery schedule the morning of xx? I'll be the guy sleeping on the table, you get to work on the unoccupied end."

They did both at the same time?

My doc says lasers aren't used much anymore. Something about being too close to the oxygen line and shiny metal objects that can reflect the beam.

Friend of mine, a Doc had hers done a couple months ago. She's mid 40's.

Plan was, have them out on Thursday, back in th office on Monday. hahahahaha

She didn't make it back until Thursday, but not that Thursday, it was 2 weeks later.

Couldn't really eat food for 2 weeks either. Said it was VERY painful.

Yup, it was bad. I woke up maybe a week after the operation and was spitting up blood. I went to the ER and coughed up a hunk of flesh. Then a doctor had two nurses hold my arms down while he stuck a metal rod (vacuum) down my throat to suck everything else out. My wife kept screaming "you're killing him". As bad as it was I'm glad I did it because I never had a sore throat or strep again.

Yup and a Uvalectomy with it - thats the dangling thing in the back of your throat. Cut that sucka out and you will not snore again - works like a charm.

I will say, I lost 18lbs the first week. I basically only drank water and took pills. By far the worst pain I have ever been in but worth it. Been 6+ years and I haven't had a sore throat.

I must be a masochist because I want to have a tonsillectomy. I suffer from sore throat, sinus issues and tonsilloliths whenever it gets too windy. My tonsils are chronically enlarged.

My wife had her tonsils outwen she was 25. She was eating or drinking much, because it hurt to swallow. 5 or 6 days later, as we were getting ready to go to bed, she coughed, went into the bathroom, called me in there and she was coughing up blood at a pretty alarming rate. A quart just on the way to the hospital. Was well above 100 for the whole trip. She was so dehydrated, they were finishing up her third liter of IV fluid before she had to pee.

It is horrible. Had mine removed when I was 28. Lots of pain and blood.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It was the best thing I ever did to improve my health. No more sore throats and I very rarely get sick. Well worth the pain in my opinion.

l have to say BS big time!

I had my uvula burned off with a laser. For several days, every time I swallowed it felt like I was swallowing lava. It is a bad surgery and is no longer considered as the right thing to do.

I can still snore like a bear according to my wife.

Just don't do that surgery

BS? What would be my motivation to lie? I think I wrote a thread about this years ago. There are reasons why folks snore but I think the major reason is a reverb of the uvula.

I just know that I don't snore anymore is all and yes it hurt like a mofo for a month. I have a friend from Belgium who had the operation as well. Painful for sure. The only problem he has is that his Dad can't understand him on certain words. I guess he lost his ability to do some sort of glutteral sound that folks from Belgium use.

There is no way I could snore any more. I can't even make a 'snoring' noise if I try.

My wife just had hers removed, she is mid 30's. She was on antibiotics and pain relief meds for a few weeks, but no problems. She claims it was a good decision to remove them and is glad she did.

Maybe BS is the wrong reply. It may have worked for you, but not for me. I friend of mine is an ENT surgeon in South Carolina. He has said that removing the uvula in not in favor with the best practices anymore. I notice that when I eat I have to be much more careful to avoid gagging. Nature gave us a uvula for a reason and it was not to make us snore.

I would not have had it done if I knew what I know now.
