Docs... How bad is my throat?

Seems to be hurting on the right side and causing my ear to ache as well. Its been a bad allergy year. I've been on fexofenadine and sudafed and still having some issues. Is this something that will clear up on its own or do I need to go see a professional and get a scrip for some bottled hell?

And I know its hard to diagnose much just on text. So how's about a picture?

looks like you've got a canker sore, they suck and hurt. I don't know that there's much you can do about it now other than wait.

porsche4life 09-27-2010 07:05 PM

Whats on behind the sore I think is my cause for concern. I've never had a canker sore cause an ear ache...

I'm familiar with canker sores. I had braces for almost 3yrs....

sammyg2 09-27-2010 07:26 PM

Looks like we have to operate. Down a 5th of jack and lean up close to the monitor.
This might sting a bit, then you'll feel a little pressure. Now say ahhhhhh........

porsche4life 09-27-2010 07:31 PM

If I down a whole fifth you better check for a pulse...

A few shots would make it feel better though...

gassy 09-27-2010 07:36 PM

why did I click on this thread.

nynor 09-27-2010 07:38 PM

gonna have to amputate the whole head.

porsche4life 09-27-2010 07:39 PM

Hey... It would get me out of this lab report explaining why my diels-alder reaction did not produce any product crystals....

Tobra 09-27-2010 07:40 PM

Gargle with warm salt water.

The swelling is blocking up the tube on that side and jackin' with that ear.

That picture is scheisse, but if you look on a line from the sore to the tip of the uvula(thing hanging in back of throat), it looks more than somewhat crappy. Warm compresses on the side of the neck/melon below the ear that hurts may be helpful too.

You know any good ENTs you can go to?

looking for pron?

Drdogface 09-27-2010 07:41 PM

You need to floss more too ;)

porsche4life 09-27-2010 07:45 PM

The staining on my teeth is from improper flossing when I had the braces. :(

I don't think there is a good ENT in this area. I would have to go to the city.

I was planning on going to the school nurse on wednesday. She won't be able to do much other than refer me to a local doc with a $5 office call. The doc I normally go to I don't like much and it takes an ice age to get in there. Might as well go where its cheap...

Think its bad enough I need an ENT doc?

Tobra 09-27-2010 08:01 PM

How bad does it hurt and for how long, any changes in hearing, ringing or muffled, why are you listening to a foot doctor about your ear?

Me, I am a cheap ass. I would be gargling with salt water, drinking tea with lemon and honey, generally doing whatever palliative crap I could think of before going to a specialist.

porsche4life 09-27-2010 08:07 PM

You are the closest thing to a medical professional I have talked to other than my boss the pharmacist...

Its been hurting since Thursday. I can still eat but it is uncomfortable. The soreness in the ear started Saturday night. I haven't checked temperature. My forehead has felt warm but I got a good sunburn this weekend... I don't forsee myself going to a specialist yet. I just don't have time.

stomachmonkey 09-27-2010 08:20 PM

Get a good nose hair trimmer.

porsche4life 09-27-2010 08:22 PM

I know... I've been cursed with hair by genetics... Just think.. Thats at 19.... I'm afraid what I'll look like at 50.

Tobra 09-27-2010 08:24 PM

Go to the clinic and see what they have to say. I foresee antibiotics in your future.

I'm 46 this Sunday.

Graduating to a chainsaw this year.

porsche4life 09-27-2010 08:25 PM

Ugh... Got any suggestions on which one to demand to not **** my guts out? I hate zpaks with a passion.

I know my mom is allergic to Bactrim...

I don't take many drugs, they kick my ass when I do.

HHI944 09-27-2010 08:44 PM

Just go to your local pet shop that has a good stock of fish stuff. Buy a bottle of Fishmox and pop a few a day. It sounds crazy, but fishmox has one ingredient..... amoxycillin.
I keep a bottle around so I don't have to go crawling to the doc every time I need an antibiotic.

porsche4life 09-27-2010 08:46 PM

We keep that in the pet stuff at work... But I think I'd rather not. I am studying to be a pharmacist and I'm gunna pretend I didn't read that....

nynor 09-27-2010 08:47 PM

i looked it up. its true. fishmox is 250mg tabs of amoxicillin. i am so going to get some of that for when the zombies come.

nynor 09-27-2010 08:50 PM

holy shizzit!

Amazon.com: Fish Mox (Amoxicillin) 250mg, 100 Capsules: Kitchen & Dining

and cephalexin, penicillin, ampicillin, and..... crazy!

porsche4life 09-27-2010 08:50 PM

I have a fear that the purification methods for fishmox are not as good as those for human amoxil....

HHI944 09-27-2010 08:50 PM

Ummmm, OK. I didn't suggest anything illegal or even immoral, but if you want to pretend it is and go waste a doctors time only to get a scrip for the exact same crap you could have just bought off the shelf......well, that's your choice.

I think you're greatly overestimating the purification methods used for the human consumption variants. I've used fishmox many times without a problem.

crustychief 09-27-2010 08:51 PM

Don't kiss the "ladies o the night" anymore!

slodave 09-27-2010 08:51 PM

Just don't forget the medication baths... And it's 250mg's for each 10 gallons of water you consume.

porsche4life 09-27-2010 08:53 PM

Wasting a doctors time? I'm sorry I don't like taking my health into my own hands... When you build up a tolerance to the antibiotics b/c you have been taking too much... Let us all know so we can point and laugh....

In an emergency/apocalyptic situation I'd be right there with you. Something like this. I'm not about to self medicate....

hah. i bet its even better. people are crazy about their pets.

HHI944 09-27-2010 08:57 PM

I guess we have different priorities. The last time I saw a doctor for a non-emergency related issue was for him to scratch his head and tell me that he had no idea what was wrong and send me home with amoxycillin. $400 later and I was in the same place I could have been for $30 at a pet shop.

It's not like I use it wantonly, probably 3-4 times in the last 5 years. If I'm still able to make the decision, I'll more than likely make the decision to forego a doctor visit.

Talewinds 09-27-2010 08:57 PM

It's related to allergies and sinus drainage. Like canker sores they're one of those misunderstood anomalies that get set off by allergies, stress, and/or immune issues.
They behave exactly like canker sores but appear back on your tonsillar area. It's very normal to have the pain in your ear associated with it, but just why I've never understood. Maybe the proximity of nerves, etc.

After 20 years of on again, off again, and sometimes severe congestion and conditions related, such as sinus infections I finally tested and discovered on my own that I have a pretty chronic sinus reaction to drinking milk, and I like milk a lot. Since I switched to almond milk in January my sinus issues have subsided and I've had no more of those ulcers in my throat, and mine would look just like that photo.

The web is of little help. Just like canker sores there's relatively little definitive info.

Warm salt water DOES help.
Usually takes 5-10 days to dissipate.

porsche4life 09-27-2010 09:01 PM

Hmm... That would explain the giant sore... Whats behind it is what has me worried though.

And I know its not a milk problem... I avoid that, I have lactose issues I know.

If I was going to be out that kind of money I might think of it differently. But if I go through the school nurse I will be out $5 bucks plus w/e scrips. So maybe $50 bucks if I get some killer meds.

If I don't go through the school it will be on my folks insurance and not much more. I think $15 copay then the meds.

Geronimo '74 09-27-2010 09:06 PM

You have intestinal polyps, get a colonoscopy.

porsche4life 09-27-2010 09:07 PM

Bahahaha!

No!

slodave 09-27-2010 09:08 PM

Looks like a STD.

porsche4life 09-27-2010 09:09 PM

I wish... Then at least part of it would have been fun...

LeeH 09-27-2010 09:43 PM

When I first saw the pic, I KNEW this was going to be a good thread! :p

porsche4life 09-27-2010 09:44 PM

I try my best not to disappoint Lee!

Tobra 09-27-2010 09:47 PM

$400? I am doing something wrong.

porsche4life 09-27-2010 09:48 PM

Thats what I was thinking... Even with the best meds at full tilt that still seem high...
