Idiots and watches.
Why is it that every dipwad with a 10 year old, fluted bezel, bare-bones datejust thinks it should be worth 5k and instantly gets offended if you you ask for a CoA or to have a jeweler inspect it????
I've gone to look at two listed on craigslist, with a fair price in cash, in hand. One was so fake it hurt and the guy started screaming at me because I pointed out the fact that it was fake. The other was in nice condition, but the guy wanted more than MSRP on a 2010 model for his purchased in 2000 and wouldn't budge. |

You are right. Those rolex guys are nuts. you would probably do better with a watch dealer. If I weren't spending all my money on my Porsche habit, I would buy an IWC.

There's a Breitling I'm eyeing off CL. It looks authentic from the pics and asking price is $400, so it's almost certainly stolen by some imbecile that can't use google to figure out that he stole a $5k watch. Part of me wants to snatch it up fast, if it's real, the other part of me doesn't want anything to do with that type crap....................................

If you are serious then look no further
Rolex - Alan Furman & Co. Remember that certain Rolex things make them more expensive. For example the steel looking bezels can be platinum. I believe some face colors are more expensive than others. And then numbering can make some difference...roman numerals are harder to find so probably a little more expensive. |

About 6 months ago I bought this one second hand from a dealer in town.
He originally had $6,500 on it but with cash and a bit of negotiation I did much better than that... The same watch now is $12,500 new. It's a 2000 model with papers and box. Do what I did. Go into a second hand dealer with cash and let him know you have cash. Bargain hard and have fun doing it. Smile a lot and crack jokes and ask him about his family. Keep it light and as I said have fun. Stay away from the E Bay, Craig's list etc or anything you can't feel/see in person before parting with the cash. My "daily" is the TAG Heuer is on the right. I've had that for about 11 years. The Sub Mariner only gets worn when going out or special occasions. ![]()

At some point in my life I will probably buy either a Rolex or a Breitling (a high-end watch). I will buy new only, from a dealer. I don't care if there's a "better deal" to be gotten elsewhere.
If I'm going to blow $4k-$5k on a frikkin' watch, I'm not about to increase my risk/exposure to save a few lousy hundred bucks. WAY too many fakes out there, and some of them are extremely good now. The peace of mind is worth it, and I'd document everything, keep receipts, etc.

I own about a dozen watches and a very nice case which keeps them all wound properly. I dont own a Rolly and I just have no desire to buy one. Just not my cup of tea. I have sold some watches on ebay but always felt like i was the exception to the rule in that I sold authentic ones. I would rather pay a few bucks more for a dealer bot watch

Check out Goodwatch
Wristwatches for Sale, Collector Watches at Bargain Prices
Cliff jones is a great guy, with great prices. I have bought several watches from him including a rare RLX 5512 and a lovely vintage RLX Date for the lady. I would never buy any watch from CL because unless you really know how to get inside and look at the movement you could get royally stuffed. Good luck with the hunt

I would strongly agree w/ P-O-P, buy a new Rolex if that is what you want and buy it from a reputable jeweler. You won't get screwed. That is the way I would go. Sure there are good used watch dealers but chances are you will not find the assortment that you really want and even if it's a real Rolex, how has it been cared for?

The problem is that there are a lot of idiots out there, on both sides of the table. More of them are born, every minute.
I've been selling off most of my watch collection lately and I have come across more than my share of stupid people. There was one jackass that wanted my to send the watch to "his watchmaker" in another country, so that he could open up the watch (and thereby ruin the waterproofing guarantee from the manufacturer) to inspect it. Only then, would he decide if he wanted to buy it or not. Yeah, I'm really going to trust someone that I don't know, in another country. with an expensive watch. Buy from a dealer or from a trusted seller on one of the watch forums, like Timezone. If you buy a Rolex, look for one that hasn't been serviced yet and send it off to Rolex for a complete service after you buy it. JR |

Buying used and then having serviced seems to defeat the concept of buying cheaper/used from a used dealer. It will cost a minimum of $500 - $700 to have a Rolex serviced by a Rolex service center so if you get a really good deal then it's your call but I would still buy new. A new Rolex will appreciate over time and will always be a worthwhile investment.

Having said that, I usually buy new watches. I only buy used when I am looking for a particular watch that is no longer available new. My experience has been that if you buy new, after around 10 years the watch will be worth more than the original purchase price, for a stainless steel sports model. Gold watches are a different story. JR |
