What happened to this guy? The lost idealism of my youth...
This was the soundtrack of So Cal in the 70's. Harvest, CSNY Deja vu, KNX-FM, Dave Hall et al. I loved the music; but I also had to grow up dammit.

The line from Sweet Home Alabama says it best.
"Well, I hope Neil Young will remember a southern man don't need him around anyhow"

Nneil Young was an artist and songwriter of the highest order. If Lynyrd Skynyrd or anybody else has a problem with Southern Man, the problem can be found in a bumper sticker I saw yesterday: "The truth will set you free. But first, it will make you angry."

And anyone with a problem with Sweet Home Alabama will feel the same way.

FWIW Ronnie Van Zant was a huge fan of Neil Young. Much like Springsteens Born in the USA a lot of people completely missed the intentional irony and satire of Sweet Home Alabama.
Ronnie wears a Neil Young tshirt on the Street Survivors album cover and Neil has been photographed sporting Skynyrd t's. Neil wrote Powderfinger for Skynyrd to record but the plane crash ended that.

Great writer, but awful singer. Awful. It's painful or me to listen to that out of tune, shrieking voice, but I think he writes amazing music.

When you ask "what happened to this guy" - is that a metaphorical question, as in what happened to the Neil Young that was part of the soundtrack of my youth? - because as far as I'm concerned, he hasn't gone anywhere. He still puts out great albums, his sold out shows kic kass, whether he is performing solo or with Crazy Horse, and he's still an inspiration to the new generation of musicians.
Neil Young is a ****ing American (or Canadian) treasure, and I'm not the only one that feels this way. Compare Bob Dylan or The Stones to Neil Young; still prolific writers and still selling out concert halls, but I will take Neil over Bob or the glimmer twins any day. If I missed the OP's point, I apologize; I just saw him perform again this summer, and he is still as relevant as ever.

I suppose it was a bit metaphorical - and I guess I violated the don't-drink-and-post rule.
But growing up in southern California in the early 70's I thought this guy had a lot of answers. And I loved the music. Now, I can't stand his bitter diatribes. I am sure he can still rock, but in a recent clip of him he looked pretty haggard. He didn't have any answers. Life moved on and got complicated, and old Neil just kept throwing stones and easy targets. I do admire him for supporting the Bridge School, but he did have a kid there too. I have to admit that I've changed - not to sure if I can say that about Neil. "Let's impeach the president for lying And leading our country into war Abusing all the power that we gave him And shipping all our money out the door He's the man who hired all the criminals The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors" Pretty lame. I wish he'd stick with the metaphorical poetry and leave politics to the other idiots.

I know you may or may not believe this but he's a Republican who supported Reagan.
If you want metaphorical poetry, give Chrome Dreams II a try. Cheers! :-)

Musicians don't have answers - they are posing questions.

Yeah, the dude is way into Trains. In fact his son works at a local train/hobby shop in So Cal. And at one point, he put together investors and bought Lionnel. I don't know where that stands today though.

I was never really a fan of his but lately I've changed my mind. Yeah, the voice can be a tad annoying, sort of like Dillon, but to me it ads to the music. It's completely opposite of the synthesized, made in a studio pop we get force fed today. |
