Should a guy who owns 2 Air Cooled Porsches be allowed to collect Social Assistance?
Nothing to see here. This was a hypothetical question about a family member who is retired, owns some fancy german iron, and is collecting old age pension.
This was certainly not directed at anyone who posts on Pelican, used to post on Pelican, or even prefers to dine on Pelican at Thanskgiving dinner instead of Turkey.

Tricky question with too many variables to give a clear answer. I have 2 Porches and an MB, I bought them when times were good and I could pay cash. Now if something were to happen and I needed help why should I nave to sell them?
If that were the case, anybody with anything would have to sell to get help. Then again, it all depends on the situation

here in utah, if a person has to rely on medicaid to pay long term hospitalization, the state pretty much takes their house, unless they can sell it and use that money to pay their bills. seriously. i was pretty much blown away. a person pays taxes their whole life to the state of utah, but when it comes to them needing medicaid, the state gets their house, too. now that i think of it, i want to be a government.

Unemployment insurance, collected temporarily while looking for a new job, no - keep the toys. Once the unemployment has run out and this hypothetical person has moved onto welfare, yes, sell the toys. Unemployment insurance is just that - insurance. It should bridge the gap between jobs, especially in this economy. It's meant to be temporary, and shouldn't really have any stigma attached to it, IMO, any more than putting a claim through for a rental car when your regular car gets stolen, or a hotel bill when your house burns down. But if you fail to find another job before the insurance runs out, no way should you be keeping toys, house, etc. I'd take a minimum wage job at the mall or a restaurant before I took welfare, and you can bet I'd be selling my toys at that point in my life.

Not enough info to tell. Are these cars I would be interested in having, personally? If yes, then maybe he should sell them to me in these depressed times....

Dan, ask unkabibby.
He's a drive-by troller and probably can't be bothered to explain himself.

Social assistance or old age pension?
There is a big difference there.

I'll play the troll game -- the answer is yes.
Let's look at it this way -- what if a single-father of three children owned a home free and clear, and then lost his job. Ultimately, unemployment insurance runs out, and social assistance is the only option. Should he sell the only "asset" he has, and guarantee a further downward spiral to absolute poverty? I don't think so. It would be better to allow him to keep the asset, and provide some sort of financial security in my opinion. If he's older, with no retirement plan avaialble to him, the Porsches could represent his "nest egg". I don't think we as a society (American or Canadian) should expect people to hit rock bottom and become destitute before we extend the social saafety net to help them. After all, we don't expect it of corporations. Back to the single-father example -- if he has to sell his only asset, he really is setting up a situation of financial failure that will also have a huge impact on his children. Ultimately that may cost the public purse far more money. |

Of course they're air cooled. If they were water cooled that would be a different story.

WOW TOUGH CROWD OUT THERE.....single father of 2 with child support.. i'm closing in on 50 years old i've been out of work since jan. i'm a local 3 electrican by trade and since some of us are allways out of work .... i'can't tell you the cars not just 2 but maybe 10 or more in that many years that i have had to give up just to make it to another month. if i own free and clear it's like money in the bank. in most cases 944's are not worth much but it has helped you can allways buy another one when things get better. i don't think anyone should be forced to sell their assets. i say thank god for working women...
