Exclamation Would you buy a car that has an accident reported on the carfax?

Hey all,

it's me again. I'm looking to possibly purchase a 2008 VW R32 but the carfax says it's been in an accident. It doesn't disclose the details of the accident, but I'm a bit wary nonetheless. I have the car for the weekend (well, till later today) and have loved every minute driving it, but the dealer wants $21,223 and it's got 46k miles on it. Of course, he neglected to mention the accident when we were talking.

Also, it rained last night and when I'm driving the car, when I slow down or come to a stop, I can hear what sounds like water sloshing around somewhere. The car doesn't have any leaks into the cabin that I'm aware of, or I would've noticed them by now. Is this normal, or what could be causing it? It sounds like something near the back, so maybe it's the gas tank (although I doubt it).

Any advice? Thanks all in advance!

Run fast and run far. Any dealer that doesn't disclose an carfax-logged accident when demo'ing the car is less than reputable. Water sounds just confirm that.

+10

If that car is just perfect take it to a local body shop and have a pro look at it on a lift. There are other cars that have never been in a wreck.

So you guys don't think it'd be the gas tank? It has a little less than half a tank...

Water sounds can come from many things including shoddy repairs that allow water penetration or having driven the vehicle through water and flooding it out.

Look under the carpets. Are the nuts pristine? Are the carpets pristine? What type of damage?

You have a negotiating point now for why this vehicle is NOT worth the asking price. Is this THE vehicle or just another with many other examples available?

Price sounds high to me.

Accident damage that is properly repaired is not an issue. Improper repairs ARE! This car needs to be on a lift with a professional going over it prior to your hard earned cash going towards it. NOT their professional, YOURS!

Why the new to you car? If you don't have to act immediately I would walk. But I hate to spend money...

When I sold my E46, the buyer ran a Carfax and came back with some questions. Turns out that pedestrian encounter I had showed up on Carfax because she filed a claim against my insurance. Nothing more than her palm prints on my hood, but it showed. When I got hit very hard from behind and the repair bill was $7k, well, that didn't show on Carfax.

Just got off the phone from the dealer, he said the accident involved a minor fender bender, where the previous owner hit the back of another vehicle with a trailer hitch, and it popped out part of the front bumper, but because the p.o. babied the car, he replaced the whole front bumper and vw emblem at the time. There was no structural damage or frame damage.

Pretty detailed explanation. He have any documentation to prove it?

I agree that the price sounds high. However, the reason I have to act now is because there's another interested party waiting for my decision because he wants to buy the car for his son. And they came to the dealership after I got back from the test drive.

People always understate the severity of the damage. A Carfax accident is going to taint the value of a car, in the same way a salvage title would. The car will be harder for you to sell and you'll get less for it. I wouldn't pursue it unless you really want it and have it checked out. Even then, I'd discount it $2-3K below the actual market value for an untainted example.

You are acting on emotion. Let the car go. It is nothing special. Plenty more out there.

I wouldn't believe a word of that if it's coming from the dealer. Don't let it influence you.

I do hear that from time to time in my 944 with a half of a tank of gas on sudden stops, etc. This is usually if I have the stereo off and windows closed because I am actually listening for an odd noise that I thought the car was making before. Under normal driving conditions, I don't recall hearing it. I am not sure how this might relate to VWs, but I hope it helps.

Had a jeep that would make sloshing noises right after we bought it. Turned out that one of the tires had about two gallons of water in it - LOL! Guess somebody aired it down a little much off roadin and then crossed a stream.

Also, the spare mounted on the rear of my Pathfinder is currently full of water. Need to take care of that. Hate to use the spare and have it full of water. I mean this one is FULL! Don't even know if there's room for air in it.

Sure plays hell with tire pressure.

Oh, and Porschegirl? Let this one go. R32 is a killer car, but they made plenty of them. Anytime a dealer tells you there's another buyer right behind you, call their bluff and walk away. It's a pressure tactic. Your refusal to respond puts you back in control. Either it's true and you resisted the emotion and high price, or it's false and then you are REALLY in a good bargaining position. Walk away and they call two days later? That makes them YOUR beyotch! Either way, there are other R32's out there.

Always fish for prior ownership on your own-

I found the previous *TWO* owners of my BMW from a biz card left in the car, contacted both and learned it had a ton of great maintenenace done to it.

Like it has been said above, the car is plain worth LESS with accident history on the carfax. Even if it was just a large fly cracking the windshield, when it is time for you to sell the car, it will fetch several thousand less.

And a couple of questions going a little further:

- Why even buy from a stealership? Can't you go find a decent car private party? That will save thousands out of the hole

- Why the VW? Go drive a mazdaspeed3. You can almost get a new one at that price!

George
