Anyone Drive a Miata in Winter?

Just curious if anybody drives a Miata in the wintertime? ..and by winter I mean in snow. Especially asking about the 2006+ models.

And yes, if I did this, I would get a hard top and use winter tires.

Thanks!

My '99 Miata is my daily driver. With summer tires on it, the car almost won't move if the road looks like it's starting to turn white. With Blizzak snow tires It goes through snow up to the floor boards . I made it through last winter without a hardtop, and I don't intend to buy one this year.

Drove my 91 through a really bad Colorado winter, it's actually quite a fun machine in snow, I had 4 studded snows, that made it possible. My only issue was the few times it was deep and heavy enough to high side it.

You'll probably get better results asking this at Mata.net's forums. Is say yes, but then, I never see snow.

Thanks all. Seems to be a consensus about what I expected...fine with snow tires, just avoid deep stuff. We don't usually get more than a few days of deep stuff, for which we'll have a Subie.

I'd love a stock-ride height Miata, with hardtop, snow tires, and a Torsen for winter driving

Sadly, I still need a four-door for my DD at this time.

My 2 brothers-in-law both drove their Miatas year-round. Put some Blizzaks on it and drive through anything!

I don't know. My wife and I owned one when we moved from California to the foothills of Colorado about fifteen years ago.

I put a set of set of studded Blizzaks on it and found it marginal, at best. Granted, we lived at 8800 feet so we were often dealing with pretty deep snow. We sold the car after the first winter and she's been driving Toyota Landcruisers ever since.

Friend of mine drove his first gen year round in MN. No snow tires, no hard top, no issues.

His 'new' daily driver is an Elise, so he is a bit of a masochist.

Drove my 94 all the time in Colorado, it had limited slip.

Put some Blizzaks on it and a "Tube Sand" over the rear axle. Was fun as h...

I did not try it when we got 30" of wet snow in March, tho... there's a limit.

I drive my MazdaSpeed3 all year-round with Blizzaks on 16" steel rims during the MI winters. The only problem I have is the low clearance of the car, which will also be an issue with the Miata. The front wheel drive in the MazdaSpeed3 makes driving in bad weather a breeze, especially with the Bridgestone Blizzaks!

Not a Miata but I drove my RX-8 in the winter with snow tires. I had a dedicated set of 16" wheels with Bridgestone Blizzaks and ran circles around SUV's with all season tires. The only issue was ride height in some cases, especially when parking where snow accumulated on the sides.

We ended up trading it for a...wait for it...Smart car. Miata dealer wasn't too interested in the Pcar. But the local Pcar dealer is also a Smart dealer. So the C4 is gone. Long live the C4. I'm Porsche-less again. (..and probably for some time..)

Thanks all!

Sure. Anyone who can brave the snow in high heels and a dress should be able to manage a Miata in those conditions. And you can keep the ice scraper in your purse....

C'mon, that took over 10 posts. You guys are getting soft.

For my wife. She loves it. Time was due to get a car for her. And the deal worked out.

I'll find another Pcar when I recover from this mi$take.

From the Boxster forum I thought you were going to pull the trigger on a 986. Then I saw this, threw me

I know a couple of folks locally with Smarts. One is a mainly wifey's daily, the other is a daily but he enjoys bringing it on runs and carving the twisties with it. Good city car, not so great highway.

I've been following your misadventure with the 964. I hope you are able to get back to Porscheville sooner than later.
