Capturing Lawn Mower Oil Temperature

I recently purchased an Ariens Zoom 42 zero-turn moer and love it. It is powered by a Briggs & Stratton 16.5 INTEK engine. I want to monitor the oil temp but, unfortunately, there is no place to attach a sender (without drilling and tapping the case). By question is... how representative is the engine case itself and/or the outer surface of the oil filter for indicating the actual temperature of the oil?

There are strap-on oil temperature gauges for pipes that could be used on the oil filter and standard surface thermometers could be used on the case. Any wisdom and insight to the question posed will be much appreciated - respectfully, opinions addressing the legitimatacy of this are not.

What about on the dipstick, as some VW and Porsche gauges do?

Just add Elephant Racing's finned oil cooler lines and cooler, and don't worry about it.

I run AMSOIL 100% synthetic oil in my Honda lawnmower but I've always wondered how to get an accurate temp from it....

Use the old beetle temp trick. If you can hold the dipstick and pass it slowly (2-3 mississippi's) from hand to hand you're OK.

A Briggs & Stratton 16.5 INTEK engine. Ha, just urinate on the engine. If it boils off it's OK, if it vaporizes it too hot

the real answer to your question would require a Master's thesis

what are you worried about? high heat?

get some of the crayons from Omega and try those on the case - if too hot you have answered one question

next step up in accuracy is to drill or abrade a small "dent" in an area that has the hottest oil - the closest you can get to flow away from the combustion chamber.

stick a thermocouple in there with some thermal paste and put a few layers of Gorilla tape over it - monitor that with a thermocouple reader

some multimeters can read type K tcples - Keithley or look in the Omega catalog

Drill a hole in the oil fill cap that a meat thermometer will fit snugly into. Seal the junction with silicone.
