Family transfer spoon question
When my grandfather passed, his .357 revolver went to my sister. There was never any paperwork on the original transaction, as I think he bought it used from a friend of his back in the early eighties. I have a .380 semi auto that I won at a dinner. I already have a .380 semi auto. The new .380 is registered to me. I want to swap this to my sister in exchange for the .357.
Anyone know the steps to do this properly, especially since there is no paperwork on the .357? I live in PA and have a CCW(if that matters).

You need to check the PA laws, but I think that PA is easy on "Face to Face" transactions. I Texas, as long as both parties are in State, you can sell a firearm directly.
Here are some clues: http://crime.about.com/od/gunlawsbystate/a/gunlaws_pa.htm

How is that .380 "registered" to you? I bought guns in PA when I lived there and there was no registration then. Did they change the law in the last 15 yrs? Usually, you can transfer guns between residents of the same state without going through an FFL, either for free or for money, as long as both are non-prohibited possessors.

That doesn't mean it's registered to you. Which dealer did you use? I've bought from Braverman in Wilkinsburg and Pittsburgh Gun Club in MacDonald. They keep the form 4473 for 10 years and then destroy it. They don't hand it off to any gov't. authority unless the gun turns up in a crime and the manufacturer links it back to the point of sale. The FBI NICS check only verifies that you're eligible to own a gun, not that you actually bought one and certainly nothing linking the actual gun to your name. I'm almost positive you can buy and trade and gift guns to PA residents who meet the eligibility requirements. I sold a handgun on Backpage two weeks ago, met the guy in a parking lot, did a bill of sale and exchanged cell phone photos of each other's driver's license and CCW's just to cover our asses. Totally legal in AZ. YMMV. Last time I sold a gun in PA was to a Philly cop, so I didn't bother with anything beyond seeing his badge.

Rick, if the "about.com" is correct, when you do a face to face between private parties, it has to be done in a Sherrif's office. Exceptions listed are family members, and deals with Law Enforcement. It doesn't mention "siblings" in the family exemptions.
It also states that registration is not done in PA. I wouldn't RELY on about.com for state gun law information.

Then Eric can just do the swap through one of his parents, since it's kosher to go between parents and kids. Honestly, since there's no record of this stuff, I'd just do the swap at home whenever you want. I'm guessing the cops will laugh if you call and ask to set an appt. to do this at the station.
