Workhorse Bicycle Thread

Whenever we have "show you bicycle" threads, everyone posts their carbon fibre-Italian-racing-featherweight-motocross-megabuck machine.

No-one ever posts the donkey cycle that gets them to work in the rain, hauls groceries, pulls the kiddie trailer, carries the surfboard, and basically does the real work.

Do you have such a bicycle? Show it, please.

Just got done riding it. I love my bucket. Marin Larkspur, about 8 years old. Simple steel. Works for me. A bit rusty. Like the owner.

Any bike that works for a living, is what I'm after. Donkey bikes. Commuters count!

Not mine, but a workhorse that I photographed while visiting Seoul:

This is my newest. I call it the Pewter Commuter in honor of all of the custom pewter anodized parts I've been stashing in my desk drawer over the past few years. The bike is built on the Handsome Cycles Devil frameset, and features a 1x8 drivetrain and as many Paul parts as I could fit.

My favorite is the custom mini-Flatbed that I built about a decade ago, now anodized to match the rest of the bike.

The bike is a joy to ride, and keeps me out of my car for my short trip to work.

More of this bike, my coworkers' bikes, and a shop tour can be found here:

Works great...

This has been useful for:
A burley.
A trail-a-bike.
A trail-a-bike with a burley behind it.
A tandem trail a bike.
(Just sold that godforsaken thing last weekend, Whee!)
and, it has been my go-to bike for workouts on the weeknights (and today) since it's much easier to keep one bike handy than to haul them in & out...

Great ride, and much improved after putting nicer brakes/levers on. Aside from that - completely stock.

Next (after tandem trail-a-bike) comes a true tandem. Daughter is big enough to stoke now (getting one with very short rear standover), and the single trail-a-bike will go behind that.

Surly crosscheck! Most comfy bike I've owned. Trying to find a burley nomad utility trailer for it. I will use it for dog, camping, and grocery runs.

Bike looks like a heavy clunker compared to a road bike.

I saw an article a couple of years back about some company that was building bikes to sell in Africa, solid single speed bikes that had capacity for a passenger and had the wider tires and super solid frames. It was kind of a charity thing where the bikes were sold at cost and they offered attachments for a back wheel driven water pump for small scale irrigation.
I thought it was a great idea.
Sorry to go OT

I have an older version of this - mine is built up with 8-spd barcons and rear rack instead of front

From this - owned from new, twice stolen, twice recovered, very tatty, 21 years old - halfway through strip - the picture does not show how bad it was, took me an hour to clean the old grip goo off my fingers.

To this - my lunchtime trainer.

It is a Salsa Casseroll. Nice utilitarian steel frame.

Every day commute bike. Rain, shine, whatever, 6 miles to; 6 miles fro.
(Sorry, Angela, but I really like this Brooks saddle, it was given to me by a friend, it was like hard stiff cardboard when I got it, but I used Lexoil on it, and now it cossets me like a hammock!)

I call this bike "Festoon" and as it sits in the photos, it weighs about 42 pounds, with some tools and work clothes in the bags.

Wheelsmith built those wheels for me in about '92, and they are still in really good shape, (and I'm 6'0 190lbs.) Had them trued up this year by a local celebrity wheel builder, and she said they are good to go for another good long while.

I'm working on a 20" version of this to use in my bicycle warehouse.
