I like to use copper for new pipes - it has a nice long history.

PEX is the new thang, but there are studies showing some potential for health issues.

is the cedar painted?

call the utility and ask if they have any rebates or no interest loans for upgrades

I thought PEX has been in use in Europe for decades. Is it something else instead?

I received the quote for the plumbing today and he said they typically use pex for the long runs and stub out the bathrooms/kitchen in copper. I'll look at the potential health issues. The quote was $3,800 for a re pipe, he said everything in copper would add about 20% to that so it's not a horrible difference and might be worth it for resale.

I'll get the electricians quote tomorrow and go from there. I think it will work out.

The cedar is painted. I'm not sure what it would take to get it back to it's natural state. Probably a ton or work but it would look great if it was doable.

Thanks for the great info.

don't think you'll find much info re pex & health unless you read the epidemiological journals

you can always just run the water for a few minutes to clear the bolus that's been sitting next to the pipes out - then you wind up thinking about the city's pipes...
