That's how my appendicitis started out. I had to sit through about 12hrs of it before someone could get to my house can drive me to the ER. I wasn't about to call an ambulance for something I thought was insane food poisoning.

Taxis are cheaper and usually show up in less than 12 hours.

JYL: Buddy, are you out there? Tell us you're OK...

True, but the whole time I thought I just had terrible food poisoning. Once the GF got home it was like "Hey, we're going to the ER!" Oh boy

Gall Bladder is my vote, no fun, hope they get you fixed soon.

my vote is kidney stones.

Thanks, everyone. Saw doc 11:00 am. Abdominal exam normal, temp normal, pain not gallstone (I've had those, pain location is front of chest just below ribcage).

He believes kidney stone. Urine and blood test to rule out infection/other. Ultrasound on Mon (could have waited around and had it done late afternoon today, but I just wanted to get home and on pain med. Maybe didn't make a good decision) Anti-nausea injection (threw up 9 times this am, definitely a record for me). A pain med - oxycodone I think, but am not looking at bottle just now. He said I'm going to have fun until I pass the stone, in meantime the tests will look for/rule out other things.

My wife came and got me, drove me home. By 1:00 I was in bed and conked out. Some pain on and off but basically slept until just now.

Assuming it is a kidney stone, what am I looking forward to? How long do they take to pass, do they aways pass or can they get impacted?

Also a question about oxycodone. Is it important for me to spend some time not on the drug, so I can keep tabs on how I'm actually feeling?

Forgot to mention, I had called the advice nurse around 8:00 am. She said does not sound serious, maybe urinary infection, I could go home or come in to see doc. She said no need for ER. I was sitting in my car outside the ER (Marquam Hill) at the time, so turned around and drove to the clinic (South Waterfront).

Sorry for long post and TIM (too much information).

I would have stayed there and asked them to load me up on saline solution to help it pass. I had a sudden onset of one at 2 or 3 one morning years ago. It didn't take long to figure out what it most likely was. Drove to the ER at Kaiser and arrived at 3:30, and they didn't take me in until 5:30. A doc came out to find me curled up in a fetal position. They pumped me with some huge (and I mean HUGE) amounts of saline solution, gave me pain meds and I went to work by 11:00 AM. The thing passed around 2 PM that afternoon into the little strainer they gave me. Don't know how long it will be for you, but I think that treatment helped mine pass sooner than later.

glad you're alive!

I had a (presumptive) kidney stone - had to hike out from my study area in the desert, up a canyon wall & then drive a few hours to the nearest hospital. Very painful. They couldn't find anything & figured it had just passed thru...

I was hesitant to call kidney stone cause prior to my KS I experienced 24 hrs of a "need to relieve" sensation. It was 7:00 am in my office that the pain hit. I was transported to hospital in ambulance and thought I was gonna die. Threw up multiple times in the ER before they pumped me with meds. Passing the stone - bladder to toilet was a non event. Stone going from kidney to bladder HUGE EVENT. After ultra sound the docs said it was a "moderate" sized stone. WOW!

I have never consciously passed a stone. I have stones in both kidneys with occasional pain. Abrupt changes in temperature & humidity can spark stone 'attacks' fwiw.

Your pain will tell you when the oxy winds down. About 3 hours from ingestion but you will remain sluggish for double that.

I am not a doc but a long time sufferer.

Good luck.

You're all a bunch of nancies! I give myself kidney stones intentionally just to get a good laugh while passing them.

scottmandue 10-09-2010 11:55 AM

Glad to hear you are OK...

No stones here (knock on wood) so no help from me...

Carry on... carry on...

PS: Some people have a horrible itch when taking Oxi... are you having that problem?

jyl 10-09-2010 12:34 PM

No itch. Just woozy.

Says "Topper" in Dilbert.

Pain still but diminished. Never reached a red hot barbed wire level. I surmise no stone passed. Have been drinking lots of water, peeing normally. New development is 102F fever. Oh well.

jyl 10-09-2010 06:31 PM

Wow, OHSU docs still do house calls! Not really, one of my friends at the hospital dropped by - everyone is going out to dinner (but me) and the house has become the noisy kid dumping ground. Not sure I love that. Anyway, he determined that the pain is moving to the front and lower, which suggests the stone is too. I am now equipped with a wire mesh strainer.

Lots of fluids, drink plenty of water, clear liquids if you are pukey. Staying doped up is not such a bad idea. Won't make it not hurt, just make you not care about it so much. You will probably be pretty aware of it passing and not hurting as much anymore.

If the stone gets stuck in transit, there are a number of options, including shattering the stone with ultrasound, which is actually pretty cool.

Any relationship between this episode and your epic struggles with gout?

jyl 10-11-2010 12:09 AM

Pain now further diminished. Been drinking tons of water. Urine not coming out as fast as I'd expect, considering how much I have to get rid of. So nothing is passing but I think something needs to. Ultrasound (just viewing, not shattering) tomorrow am and I guess we go from there. Had hoped this would be "done" this weekend but guess not. Earnings reports start soon, and we have an 11 y/o exchange student from France arriving tomorrow, so this is not a good time.

I don't know what relation to gout. Did some reading, a few factors in common, but not that many. I also wonder what relation to gallstone.

I've got a trifecta going on here.
