That page is forbidden to me. Germans brought rockets from being fireworks to modern times so I wouldn't be surprised if some rocket scientists worked for Porsche.

There cars show top notch engineering. The front engine watercooled have some flaws though. The 80's 911 is supposed to be one of the best cars in the world from maintenance problem standpoint.

I'll bet the 944 is one of the worst.

Ups sorry, that link went to a Space shuttle astrounout ( sp ? ) witch starte his carieer as race mechanic from Donahue.

OK the 917 was very close to a street rocket.

AFIK Porsche wasn´t involved in rocket engeneering. If yes then Porsche would be today a american company
They did some research in developing those Jumo and BMW jet engines. Mostly how to realize the lighwight parts for high reving units.

Only when the car isn't taken care of. Otherwise they are very reliable.

A couple of times when I was on the campus of Embry Riddle (an aeronautical university) I saw a Porsche poster which had a plane on it. They do have some connections in that field.

Well give him a visit and maybe we can read some interessting storys about Donahue and the 917.

Generaly a Porsche or other more complex car needs other skills then a normal 5 year then throw away car.
The problem is that those people who can handle compley engeneered cars seem to fade away or get send into the skys maintaining more compley structures in the earthbound nothing.

A observation is that today the new mechanics generation is allways seeking for a electronic device to read out the failure codes. Even if it is a old carbed car. They don´t understand how to work just out from the own brain. Hell most from them need a calculator for simple calculations, 20 years ago such people would only have cleaned the cars or made a simple oilchange job now they are called automotive "technicians" as they can operate expensive computer devices without understanding them.

You are right about the reliance on computer reads to find problems, but people would rather pay a semi experienced, semi skilled, semi intelligent man to hook up something to the car & find the problem in an hour than pay a skilled, experienced, intelligent man to trace circuits & check sensors & relays for a day.

Still on some of the early computer cars that don't have codes will either whip you or teach you & give you a sence of accomplishment.

My friend has a Porsche book which I reckon is the king of all Porsche books. Cant remember wot its called off hand but I know near the back it goes into aeronautical. They modded a 911 powerplant to be fitted to light planes. It is a prodution plane too altho in small numbers. I had a poster of it lined up against a 930 at one of my old jobs once. I WAS in the auto repair business. I've got stories, like how do you tell this kindly elderly person "The gas tank was empty", or the struggling single parent, "You have to put the chip in when you start it." We give the customer the bill and then they RAGE. I mean rage! As for the doddering mechanic , we know who they are, we get their work and they get weeded out. The other reason I got out was the low pay. Was I amazed when I found out how much I would be taking home.

The auto repair industry has been under scrutiny for a while. They came up with the ASE program. The friendly neighborhood mechanic is gone, replaced with Mr. Goodwrench, Fast Lube Techs, et al.

My advice when you're looking for a service is, when you find "good" service to "pay for good service". Think of the straight 15% waitress or that extra 5% waitress.

When I read about people *****ing about shoddy work I just think, "I want the same waitress, even though the server smokes a cigar and has tatoos".
