Going for MRI today.

Tweaked my right knee pretty good at work, the doctor thinks its a meniscus tear says the ACL still feels strong but MRI today will let us know for sure. Arthroscopic repair is what he talked about if it is a tear, any one had this and what was the recovery time.
Being a firefighter in a downtown area and hiking hundreds of stairs with equipment has not helped I'm sure. Thanks in advance

A friend had the type of repair you described. He said it was a relatively easy thing to go through and was up & going soon after.

I've been through it, but at 18. I went under with the understanding that they were going to cut the bad area out, but while in there they found it could be repaired. Recovery took a couple of months due to this, but not bad. No pain during the recovery, but the immobility sucked, especially sleeping.

I had torn meniscus with arthroscopic surgery to repair about 12 years ago.
I was walking up/down stairs the following day without crutches. Dr advised to get back on the knee ASAP pending any pain. I did milk the use of crutches for a few weeks to get sympathy at work.

I gave up on the crutches too, but I had to wear that damn immobilizer all the time. I was not supposed to put much pressure on the knee that had the stitched the cartilage.

In my late 20s I injured my leg/knee playing basketball (fractured tibia). After a 6 month cast/rehab I returned to the court and immediately upon a quick, lateral move, my knee "blew out". Orthopedic surgeon performed an arthroscopy on my knee and discovered a torn ACL (atrophied beyond repair), torn meniscus, and other minor mess. He removed the ACL and "cleaned out" everything and I was walking fine the next day with no pain, etc. 23 years later, I don't have an ACL, but sports as I knew them back then were over. However, I've never had any issues and walking, cycling, steps, etc. are what I've done for exercise ever since, but anything with lateral stress on my knee is OVER (even with a custom knee brace). I'm sure their instruments/techniques are even better now...good luck!

edited: ps: I forgot to add that I did an intense, 9 month physical therapy at a facility designed for pro athletes to strengthen the muscles to "make up" for the missing ACL and I think that has been key to my recovery.

My sister got her knee scoped for a meniscus when she was 40 and was playing soccer a week later.

I am absolutely certain she is tougher than any of you guys though.

My mom had most of her meniscus removed. She was back up pretty quickly. She had quite a bit of PT though. If I could figure out how to convert the VHS to a digital format I would post the video where they scoped her knee. I've got the vid from dads torn rotator cuff as well. Good stuff.

Thanks for the info everyone I go back to the Dr on Tues. To go over the MRI results I'm glad I didn't have to go all the way inside that machine I don't consider myself claustrophobic but that would have been tough.
Hopefully good news on Tuesday.

Good luck, and I hope for the best...even if it's the "worst", it's not THAT bad to go through

Good luck. I've got my films, but I don't know how to read them.
