Anybody ever try to refurbish DeWalt battery packs?

How to Refurbish an 18V Dewalt Battery | eHow.com

Or is it just as easy to send them out?

I just dropped off mine at a local battery shop. They did them in a day and were 1/2 the cost of a new pack.

That is probably close. It was over a year and a half ago. As I remember the new replacements were 90 bucks. The rebuilt ones work just like the original.

Doing it looks easy. Finding the exact right cells was what stopped me. And the guy that does it does it all the time.

OK....charged them all up. 9 of the 10 took a charge and show 19+ volts. One is obviously a candiadte for rebuiling.....however some hold less of a charge/run time tan my new ones....

How do I load test them and what are the parameters of dying cells? I have a Fluke meter....

I've done it and if you've got the time it is worth it. Usually it is only a few cells per pack that are bad.

You test each individual cell by charging the whole pack and checking the voltage on each cell. If I remember correctly the good cells will show a voltage of over 1.4 or 1.5V, the bad ones less.

To make it even more economical (practically free), I go to Home Depot or Lowes and ask if I can go through their battery recycle bin. Did it last night and salvaged two 18V Dewalt battery packs. These will have good cells in them I can graft into my battery packs.

Is the effort worth $180? You decide.

DeWalt batteries just suck... Plain and simple... We kill them faster than any other brand. The best battery life we have seen has been the 18v Zebra Makita stuff...

Just a guess. I could be wrong, but if the cell is a NiMH it should read 1.2V on a full charge. NiCd should read 1.5V on a full charge.

I build battery packs for my R/C glider and controller once a year or so....

There is always this option. Some insight on how the batteries go together as well.

I tried the replacement bad cell repair job, had to dewld spring steel connections in the battery pack on a snap on unit, no success in the end my snap on guy showed me the difference between an interstate repaired battery pack and a new pack, there was a difference in torque on the tool. seems battery tools are great when new, then turn into burnt offerings to the speed god.

@ Goodman> toss any potatoes in the pool lately? i did see the gumper at nhms!
