Totally awesome. The kid will probably go on to invent warp drive or something. One thing did cross my mind that is a little disturbing. If the parachute failed to open properly, the camera and iphone falling back to earth over a populated area may not have been the best idea.

I'm totally amazed that it only ended up 30 miles away. I figured it would have drifted alot farther than that.

Cool video! Amazing how far tech as come, to be able to do this relatively inexpensively.

But, isn't the claim that it went to "space" stretching the truth a bit? This went 100,000 feet, which is around 18 miles. Very high, but I thought the edge between the earth's atmosphere and space was quite a bit higher than that.

Problem is, that this has already been done - a few years ago. Plans are available online.

I remember the first Estes model rocket I built and launched. It came down on its chute, and ended tangled up high in a tree. I couldnt get to it. It stayed up there for yrs. It was a landmark in the neighborhood for a long time.

I showed this to my Son. He thought they were supposed to get approval from NASA to do this. Thats a testimony on how our kids are starting to think. I guess its because of the bureaucracy and litigious nature of things. Maybe a fear of the Feds?

He did have an idea of how to stabilize the spinning - use a U joint, bearing and an offset weight.

I think the FAA will be knocking on their door and maybe in not the most friendly way. Still, very cool for all. I hope any trouble they get into is minimal and leads to better things.

Balloon and Rocket Regs

Seems they just may have skimmed past the regs, but I don't see the FAA condoning such activity. At least I don't want to be on the airliner that swallows the balloon bag.
